I’m 20 minutes into the new Nate Bargatze special and…this is…not good.

And I just spent a fortune to go see him next October.

If you mean the Nashville Christmas special…yes. It’s def him out of his usual element doing comedy for people who are not comedy nerds.

    Nah, his new Netflix special.

And the last 10 minutes is his combination of his SNL hosting monologues.

Ugh. I didn’t even know he had a new one. I feel like the last few standup things I’ve seen him do have been a little shaky and like he’s overly self-aware of his own Bargatze-isms and doing them but the jokes themselves have felt too subtle or simply not punched up enough. I’ll have to watch and see what’s cooking.

I liked it. It’s not his best special and he slowed his pace way down, but nothing stuck out to me as bad. And any live show is gonna be way funnier in person. I wouldn’t let that deter you.

I mean, it’s not awful. But it’s also not funny, at all. He *really* plays into the “I’m so dumb” and “I don’t even know what’s going on” but it’s far and away the worst special I have ever seen from him.

I do agree it was his worst special, but I’ve liked everything he’s done. I think maybe releasing this a year after his last one was a bit of a disservice because he doesn’t have a ton of great stories, minus the donkey jumping into a pool. It was still fine enough for me. Nothing I’ll likely go back to.

  13. Currently watching the Reno 911 Christmas Special from a couple of years ago. Kind of a whiff, but the Kenny Rogers Museum but is so good

  16. I liked this Nate special more than the one before it.

  17. I am always a little confused around what material I should expect to see live when comedians release new specials. Nate is coming here in July. Do we think that would be new material?

Yeah, most comedians start new working new hours once a special is released.

Yep. As far as I know, the only time he did past material was early on when people would request it.

Yeah, once a special airs, that’s mostly the end of it although I have seen some comedians (Jim Gaffigan, Brian Regan) do like, a greatest hits in their last 10 minutes or so of a new act.

  21. Not a huge Gaffigan fan but I got free tickets to see him in college and remember thinking it was weird seeing people go nuts for the hot pockets bit. Like...we already know how the joke goes, lol

Used to adore Gaffigan (met and interviewed him back in 2006) but he’s a perfect example of waaaayyyy too many specials and is running out of material or just repeating it in different ways.

Patton also sometimes does greatest hits but it's just whatever he feels like doing

  25. trick question, I've never been able to remember all the lyrics to that one and I never will
