I've decided I'm going to record my "Grim Grinning Ghosts" cover in a cemetery late at night... Because I'm a weirdo.

 

I don't know what it is about these comps, but for the second time I find myself working on 6/4 for a submission. haha Everything I've ever done has been in 4/4 except for my submission to the Motion City Soundtrack comp and now this one.

 

Well if you guys don't hear from me after tonight it's because I got eaten by a ghost or arrested for trespassing. I'm going into a HUGE cemetery right now to record my cover of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" because I'm an idiot, hahaha. Wish me luck!

 

Even if this cover ends up complete shit, I think it deserves the title of best song on the comp for dedication to the theme alone. Haha (it'll probably be great like all your stuff though)

 

Haha thanks man! I'm recording on two devices in case I can catch some scary shit... haha. I just found a spot on the grass. Here I go!

 

UPDATE: i made it out of there alive! but there were a bunch of deer in there that were being super sketchy... haha. but i need to go back and do it again because my better recorder i was using ran out of batteries right when i hit record, and the recording i got on my tape recorder wasn't great... so i'm gonna go back and do it again soon.

 

So does the current schedule mean December is going to be a certain band and not Christmas music

 

No. This month was actually supposed to be a tribute. Instead we decided to do compilation (October), tribute (November) and Songs of 2016 compilation (December).

THEN we'll go back to the old schedule, tribute/tribute/compilation. That'll offset us by one month so in 2017 the compilations will fall on different months opening up different themes.

 

December 2017, Christmas compilation

 

last year, we had Christmas Songs or "Best of 2015" on the poll, and the "Best of" comp won by a landslide. I would also like to do a Christmas one though! In fact, now that I think about it... We should do "Christmas In July!"

 

Do we have any ideas for November yet?

 

How about both? Huge year in music, but why not do a fun christmassy cover?

I just finished an original song called Welcome To Hell. It is very dark and full of Halloween feeling. Complete with a creepy breakdown that I'm sure will give chills. Are members allowed to have two songs on the compilation? If not, I understand. Just wanted to ask before I emailed it your way.

Trying hard to do an original or another cover

 

Just for random discussion while we work on Halloween submissions... What is everyone's favorite cover they've submitted to these comps so far?

 

I really like the way my Jimmy Eat World cover came out. I originally was going to do a straight cover of that one, just copy the original, but at the last minute I decided to rewrite all of the music, and I really like how that came out. It's me trying to be Mike Kinsella, more or less, haha.

 

I've actually never listened to the Jimmy Eat World comp, didn't really get involved in these until the Best of 2015 one. Listening to this cover now and I like it a lot so far. The two guitar parts panned are called, and whatever you did to your voice (layering or some effect) sounds awesome. :)

Morning In The Moonlight cover for the Saves the Day tribute album is one I continue to try and tell myself preparation isn't everything, because it's probably one of, if not my best. And I recorded it all within a 20 minute window right before Brad posted the comp because I was worried the comp didn't have enough submissions

But the low drawl for the House of the Rising Sun cover got lots and lots of praise if I recall correctly. It's a shame because I only achieved that deep tone by have a really dry throat and blocked nose!

 

Actually enjoy my Dead Man's Bones cover I submitted for this Halloween comp. His register and tone are similar to mine so it's really fun to sing and makes me feel like I can do it without worrying as much as I would on others. That being said all of mine are "pieces" of songs - shortened one-take versions, so I feel like I'm cheating anyways.

 

Hmm Empty Apartment or a leaving on jet plane. Prob the second one, think it felt natural.
