Must've. I woke up early expecting to give it a listen since they're usually posted in the wee morning hours. I'm sure after he gets his coffee we'll be jamming.

If we do Drive-Thru next, I'll need some clarification on a few things. The label is heavily connected some artists but I can't find anything that was actually released/distributed by them for those artists, mainly Dashboard Confessional.

I was wondering something similar. Like I'd love to do a Movielife tune but the song that I'd like to do most is off a record that DTR didn't put out.

Not the guy you were quoting but not gonna be able to send anything after all. Disappointed with my friend but gonna take full responsibility and apologize to everyone in this thread (especially that person who wanted to cover the song I picked). I'll know better next time.

I'm very excited to hear the compilation though. I've been listening to the past releases on and off and always find something new to enjoy.

Looking forward to hearing everyone's work. I'll post mine in here whenever I get it. (Not to be added, but just to share!)

Actually TSAR was put out first by Fiddler, then again by Vagrant. I'm just a very big fan haha

  14. I just realized Drive Thru Records put out The Make Yourself At Home EP, Audioboxer, For All of This EP, Catalyst, and, of course, the aforementioned Swiss Army Romance. I already know how to play at least one song from each of those. Lots of goods to choose from, ugh.

Just listened through the Yellowcard comp. Great job, everyone! Kind of disappointed to see nothing from One For the Kids, but I didn't do Sure Shot as planned, so that's on me.

  18. I'm pretty sure I have the Swiss Army Romance CD with the Drive Thru logo on the back. Not sure how much they had to do with the release though. Maybe just distro? I dunno.

I think if we do the Drive Thru mixtape compilation, it needs to only be bands that have been on the label's actual roster.

What about songs BY bands that were on DTR but from albums that were released on another label? I.e. Movielife stuff from This Time Next Year (released before they got on DTR) or newer stuff from TEN (after they're stint with DTR, obviously).

  20. I'd say anything by any band from the DTR roster should be fine. I wouldn't want to be too nick-picky with it. I just wouldn't want someone choosing a Dashboard song because Dashboard was never actually on DTR's roster even those the label did work with DC on an album, ya know?

Should we have a poll for voting on the next comp with a few options, or is a Drive Thru Records one something everyone wants to do?

That explanation sounds good to me!

I'd probably end up voting DTR comp anyway and it seems to be pretty well received. I'd be willing to bet that it would win in the poll since people have probably already started thinking about it... we'll see. I'm up for anything!

  22. 1. @RyanPm40 View From Heaven -
I thought making this song first made the most sense. It kind of encompasses the sound of most of the compilation, and I like the upbeat/sing-along mood of it. I think this cover is really great. It's a fun one.

    2. @DougDubosky Sleep In The Snow -
I'm happy we got some new blood on this compilation. I hope you and the other new guys participate in other ones from now on! I really like the sound of the piano and acoustic guitar together on this track. I especially like that it's a real piano being played! The vocals sound very Jesse Lacey-ish to me.

    3. bradsonemanband Hang You Up -
I've always liked this song but wished it was more like YC's upbeat songs. So I decided to do my own take on what that might sound like. I had a string part in the bridge, but apparently I accidentally uploaded the wrong file, so I will probably upload that version when I get home from work today so you can hear that. Anyway, hope you guys like my track!

    4. @DashboardProfessional Only One -
When your voice starts getting raspy at the end of this song, I got some serious chills. You're awesome!

    5. @Jdaniels Empty Apartment -
You've got a great voice! I love the emotion you put in this. Sounds fantastic!

    6. @InfiniteArms Ten -
This is a sad song... You did a great job at adding a dark tone to it to make it even sadder!

    7. @elemenohpe With You Around -
Solid cover all around! This has always been one of my favorite YC songs.

    8. @Craig Manning Back Home -
Love your take on this song! You always kill it. You should do a whole album of covers sometime.

    9. @rbbpaperwalls Hide -
Your voice and the piano work so beautifully together. I really love this version of "Hide."

    10. @nothingsforeverdude How I Go -
You said earlier that this is one of your least favorite covers you've done, but I think it's gorgeous! Those background vocals you did in the bridge are amazing. I love how you kinda let loose when you sang those. This might be one of your least favorite recordings, but I think it's one of your best, to be honest. You nailed it. There's a lot of emotion in this and I love it.

    11. @elemenohpe The Takedown -
I love this YC song! You totally did it justice. You even got the violin parts!

    12. @RyanPm40 Dear Bobbie -
You killed it on this compilation! Love the whistles and the overall mood.

    13. @r0m4n44 Fragile And Dear -
You should have been on our Saves The Day compilation! Your voice is very reminiscent of Chris Conley's. It's awesome! I love all of the slowed down acoustic versions of songs people did on this comp. They're all great, and yours is definitely no exception! Fantastic cover.

    14. @xkhiemster Always Summer -
One of my favorite YC songs! Great job on the cover!

    15. @TedSchmosby Awakening -
I love the lo-fi quality of this one. It reminds me of old acoustic songs I used to record in my mom's garage back in the day. I love that sound. It's very warm and nostalgic for me. This cover is one of my favorites on here!

    16. @rbbpaperwalls Ocean Avenue -
I'm so glad someone picked this song to do! I was getting nervous near the end there when no one had called it out. It's one of those songs that NEEDS to be on a YC tribute album. And you totally did the song justice! I love your voice on it. I hope you do other compilations with us. I would love to hear more music from you.

    --------------------
Everyone did amazing on this comp! I feel like in the beginning of these compilations, songs were hit or miss a bit... But lately, it's been hard for me to even pick favorites because the vast majority of them are so great! I'm proud of all of you for always following through and killin it. Can't wait to get started on the next comp!

Alright, two listens in and I think everyone did fan-fucking-tastic. Seriously one of the best compilations when it comes to both participation and quality. All the newcomers/previously inactive members did an amazing job. So proud of everyone!

    ===========

@RyanPm40 - View From Heaven - I considered doing this song. Pop-punking the whole thing but all of the verses just didn't sound good when I tried messing with it. When it didn't click I gave it up and I'm glad I did. You did a fantastic job. I love how you falsetto'd all the female vocals... and they actually sound good harmonized with your regular singing voice! Such a good song. I liked how you slowed down your strum pattern for the last part, like it would've been the half-time beat if it was a full band song. Nice job!

@DougDubosky - Sleep In The Snow - Great sounding mix! Awesome piano work. It really carries the song and sounds so awesome (both in the full mix and when it goes solo). "And whatever happened that drove you..." vocals/piano interplay remind me of Andrew McMahon. Please keep submitting to these compilations (we're doing DTR next month *hopefully*, I'm sure you'd do a great Something Corporate or Socratic cover)!

@bradsonemanband - Hang You Up - Man, what are you using for that ambient kind of tone at the beginning of the song? It's got such a calming aura. You nailed the pop-punk part! Loved when it kicked in. This is one of the other songs that I considered doing. Also another one I'm glad that I left for someone else to do. You really nailed it! Sounds like you weren't rushing on this one at all, very well done Brad.

@DashboardProfessional - Only One - Awesome as always. Top notch vocals. Great mix. You always you do a fantastic job. The harmonized vocals are really nice. Keep doing what you're doing DashPro.

@Jdaniels - Empty Apartment - Such a classic OA song. You're vocals emo-fy it way more than YC did. Vocaled layers were a nice touch instead of belting it out and holding that note like Ryan does over the last choruses. Hope you keep contributing.

@InfiniteArms - Ten - Everything I come to expect from your covers. Great mix and emotive vocals. Even when they're restrained they present a lot of character and emotion. You can really convey a lot with your vocals! Pair it with a dark, dark sounding guitar riff and you've got magic right thrrr. Keep it up man! +avatarlove

@elemenohpe - With You Around - I wasn't happy with the guitar tones on this. I tried using Amplitube on my phone and running it INTO my Peavey XXX head. Then I ran that to a 4x12 cab and mic'd it. The tone I ended up with sounded (to me) like a I was running through a low-bit-rate multi-effects thing (I'm looking at you EVERY ZOOM PEDAL EVER). Couple that with my MIDI drums that weren't resampled in EZDrummer and you've got a cover that sounds less than ideal. Listening to it now, I LIKE it but I'm not proud of it like I am some other covers. This was also my first foray into Melodyne and auto-tuning so, I'm not completely satisfied with the vocals (although it was a GREAT learning experience). This song was an experiment on recording styles and while it didn't work out how I expected I'm still happy I got to cover this one. Also, I replaced California with Carolina since I live in NC. Just a way to make it more personal.

@Craig Manning - Back Home - Those harmonies are epic and I love the distortion JUST on the outro guitar. Very cool cover from you as always!

@rbbpaperwalls - Hide - You've got an awesome voice! It sounds effortless for you... even that falsetto! Plus, I'm envious of your piano skills. Once I start doing chords, my timing goes to hell. Fantastic job!

@nothingsforeverdude - How I Go - Glad you found the time to finish! You're covers always sound so great. Fragile and beautiful. Do you not use a pick when playing guitar? That or you've got the microphone close to your picking hand or something. That strum attack is what I think of as your "signature"... Great job again!

@elemenohpe - The Takedown - I kind of fell off of YC when I heard Lights & Sounds. That record just didn't connect with me so later releases never interested me enough to check out. This song was on Guitar Hero: Van Halen and it was one of my favorites to play on drums. I actually used the game (in practice mode) to help me program the drums. It was my first time programming (instead of playing live to a metronome/backing track part-by-part). It turned out really well! It was a good learning process for me that'll def help me program some original stuff. I went back to using my half-stack for recording guitars... Amplitude was fun but didn't have the punch I got from a 4x12 cab. Violin was done by MIDI mapping with a keyboard, editing in the mapper. I also added a whistling solo with a bunch of delay to pump up the violin solo! Edited the guitar solo together from 4 full takes. It ALMOST sounds seemless so I was happy with that. Overall, this is my favorite cover that I've done. Just the overall best sounding.

@RyanPm40 - Dear Bobbie - Hey! I wasn't the only one that whistled! This one has a real camp-fire feel. I could hear you playing this on the dock of a lake as the sunset. Simple and sublime. The doubled vocals sound great as well. You kept the back ups very on-pitch and used the primary vocals to add some character. I'd like to learn how to get my doubled vocals to sound that controlled. Nice cover. I really enjoyed it.

@r0m4n44 - Fragile And Dear - Damn, all of you new/previously inactive users all have amazing voices! Those wubs fit really well with that delayed, palm-muted guitar. Almost seems Brand New-esque when you add those tin-y sounding background noises. Such a cool interpretation of this song. I'm so impressed by the creativity that went into this. I usually stick close to the song that I'm covering... you reinvented it. Bravo!

@xkhiemster - Always Summer - Did you record this in a single take? That's how I began recording myself and I always appreciate the raw feeling you get from hearing someone really do it all live. I like how your more somber vocals juxtapose with the bright and sunny imagery in the lyrics. Nice job, hope you submit to future comps.

@TedSchmosby - Awakening - Is that a 12-string doing the spaced out chord strums? Some effect? All of those supportive strums sound very FULL. Fantastic layering. When everything comes in together after "I want this to be my awakening" it just hits hard and then falls back apart again to the next verse. "At least you know I care enough to write" sounded awesome as well. Well done, well done.

@rbbpaperwalls - Ocean Avenue - Again, great vocals. I liked that you didn't slow the song down much. Acoustic players tend to slow it down a lot but I like to hear an upbeat pop-punk as an UPBEAT pop-punk song... even if it's acoustic. Brad also did a really great job on this song for the Summers compilation. I told him that my only complaint about his is that he didn't do the violin part at the end... and you left it out too :tear: So... my only complaint is that you didn't include the violin part at the end! HA! Great job though. It was seriously so good.

Giving this a first listen, excited to see what everyone's done! I'm just gonna keep posting comments as I listen along :P

@DougDubosky I'm not very familiar with YC's newer stuff, but I really enjoyed what you did here! The instruments were recorded beautifully, and as Brad said, that piano sounds great. Awesome job dude! Your voice is definitely reminding me of someone that I just cannot put my finger on (maybe John Nolan at times?).. really liked what you did with the harmonies ~2 mins in :)

    EDIT

Thank you so much for the kind words, @bradsonemanband and @elemenohpe! It means a lot! Excited to move onto your stuff, liking your cover a lot so far Brad.

@bradsonemanband - Wow. I really love what you did with Hang You Up. Such a more 90s pop-punk feel than the original recording. I really think this is the best you've sounded in anything I've heard; I'm very impressed with your vocals and the instrumental production sounds fantastic. Great job at mixing and layering all the different tracks, nothing sounds out of place.

@DashboardProfessional I knew just from the tone of your acoustic that I'd like this one. I really like your vocals, and they only get BETTER as you hit higher notes. That prechorus into the chorus sounds great. The small amounts of vocal strain every now and then sound so raw and emotional, and I dig that. Guitars into the bridge sound really cool, too.

    To be continued...
