  2. @bradsonemanband I know you're typically on top of your stuff, but on the off chance you don't get a chance to get the inbox again before uploading the songs, I sent a slightly updated version of the NFG song.

I keep forgetting to thank you Brad for organising these, and being so supportive of everyone who submits. So thank you for that. Everyone always does an amazing job, and the track order is always on point.

Man, I must pick great closers or something. I've been the last song 3 for 3.

Here, here. These comps have really lit a fire under me to do things I've always said I wanted to but made excuses about (learning to record decent quality stuff, get a drum set, play more guitar outside of Rocksmith).

    So much fun.

    1. @trevorshmevor - Intro (NFG) - Perfect opener with all the added beach-y sounds. When you said you recorded a NFG cover I was expecting It's Been A Summer but this was a pleasant surprise.
    2. @snaps - You Belong With Me (T Swift) - Nice version. I'm not really a Taylor fan but enjoyed your cover, particularly the solo at the end.
    3. @Things So Impossible / @DashboardProfessional - You're So Last Summer (TBS) - I love how you guys handled the vocals. Each sticking to Adam and John's parts. Great job as always.
    4. @elemenohpe - Smooth (Santana / Rob Thomas) - This song was inescapable the summer of 99. I remember learning the intro and never bothering after the first bend... thanks to Rocksmith, I've learned the whole song (on guitar and bass) and been able to play it for a few years now. Laid down all the rock drums first, then guitar. Added some bongo stuff at the end but I may have over done that a bit! This was my first time using Amplitude for my guitar tone. Even the free amp sounded better than my Peavey Triple XXX half stack which you can hear on my HTL cover.
    5. @bradsonemanband - Ocean Avenue (Yellowcard) - I considered this song too. It came out the summer I graduated high school and I jammed that album a lot over that summer. I like your vocals on here, the restraint on the chorus as opposed to just belting it out. I like that more than how YC does it, even on their acoustic version. One complaint, didn't play the violin part at the end.
    6. @trevorshmevor - We Are Never Getting Back Together (T Swift) - Dude, you are too good at this easy-core kind of style. I wish it came that easily to me since it's the kind of music I like playing most. This could easily fit on a punk goes pop compilation. I loved the harmonic break before the ohh's in the second verse... omg, and that breakdown!
    7. @Craig Manning - Thunder Road (The Boss) - Fantastic job on the vocals. They're very strong and carry the song. Classic tune and a very summer-y choice.
    8. @InfiniteArms - Blood Red Summer (Co&Ca) - I like the way you played the lead lines on this song. The palm muting with the closed hi-hat gives this song a beach rock feel! Nice job!
    9. @phillyfradet - Under The Boardwalk (The Drifters) - I can tell you put a lot of time into this one. Your baritone vocals are on point (as expected from your previous covers) but the lead vocals are really great too! Mix sounds great as well.
    10. @bradsonemanband - Blitzkrieg Bop (The Ramones) - I thought after four shots of whiskey you'd be screaming those vocals, haha! I like your super distorted bass tone. It's a nice touch that really makes the music sound even more raucous.
    11. @Benjamin Lee - Off To The Races (Lana Del Ray) - I've never heard this song before (actually don't know if I've heard any LDR before). What is that detuned sound during the choruses? It's super eerie and I love it. Nice drum fills at the end too. I know you were saying it sounded weird but I think it fits the song well!
    12. @TedSchmosby - Warmth of the Sun (D/C) - Pretty strait forward cover. Your voice is very Dashboard so this song was a great pick for you. I like the vocal panning during the post-choruses. Good job! Hoping we do a Dashboard comp someday.
    13. @bradsonemanband - Sasha (Turnover) - Don't think I've ever heard this song. I like the ambient / room noise that your microphone is picking up. Gives the song a lo-fi feel and accentuates your strumming dynamics. Nice touch... adds character.
    14. @therookielot - Video Games (Lana Del Ray) - Again, don't think I've heard any LDR before. Musically there's a big difference between your cover and Benjamin Lee's, haha. What did you use for those keys? The distorted, swirly organ effect really surrounds the listener. I feel like I'm in some sort of limbo... just floating.
    15. @elemenohpe - Stay Out (Hit The Lights) - One of my favorite songs of all time. Reminds me of one of the best summers of my life. My pop-punk band was starting to gain some traction and we jammed Skip School, Start Fights A LOT while driving to shows. We were playing shows with A Loss For Words, The Wonder Years, Brigades (they were called Heart To Heart then) etc as these bands were about to take off... sadly, my band fizzled out shortly after that. This song reminds me a lot of that summer playing music with my best friends and hanging out on our front porch every night.

Great job everyone. This is my favorite compilation so far.

Thank you! haha I honestly have no idea. The chorus is only one layer of drums, one layer of guitar, one layer of bass, and one layer of vocals. I think it's probably the way I mixed it and/or the bass tone I went with.

  12. Thanks for the kind words, elemenohpe!

I've only heard the original version of 4 of these songs (We Are Never Getting Back Together, Blood Red Summer, Ocean Avenue and Video Games), but everyone did really good on this one. Liked my first experience listening to these songs a lot. haha

Great job on this cover! Your vocals are very Rivers. Like I said before, this song always reminds me of Mallrats (one of my fav movies during my teenage years). Great guitar tones, especially on that solo. It's so f'n Weezer!

    I agree, it is hilarious!

Must've just been the guitar and bass playing some kind of juxtaposed notes... sounds like maybe you were bending in and out of that "eerie" tone I'm talking about.

It's well deserved! Not just for your THREE submissions but for organizing and keeping up with this so well. Sooo...

Haha I've been trying to decide which two or three bands to put on a poll for us to vote on.

I'm leaning towards Saves The Day, Taking Back Sunday, or Fall Out Boy.

    What do you guys think?

  16. There were a lot of suggestions a few pages back that I'm pretty much cool with any of them making into a poll. I do think we should give the Summer Mixtspe a few days maybe before we start voting and calling out songs and stuff for the next one haha. Could be an unpopular opinion, but just my two cents.

  17. Yeah, we will let this one soak in for a few days before we start getting serious about the next one.

I'm down for any of those. I think they are all well-deserved and will have big responses.

I've only started participating since MCS but it seems that we've either decided or had a poll for next month up before the Monday a release was put out. Then we start calling songs on Thursday... just what I noticed.

I don't mean to sound pushy or to overlook what we've all done... I just want to start working on something new.

    WHAT. SHUT UP. WHAT.

Thank you both! I really wanted to do it straight a cappella but didn't think I could pull it off. The guitars were recorded with an acoustic acoustic, but I didn't like how they came out plugged in. So I threw a crunchy amp plugin on those tracks and tweaked a few things.

Just got done listening to the Summer comp, and I really dug your take on T-Swift, @snaps, even though I wasn't familiar with the song before.

@elemenohpe your version of Smooth is excellent both musically and vocally. I like the dirtiness and attitude. I saw that you learned how to play the parts via Rocksmith? Crazy how a video game could be such a valuable learning tool.

  24. Downloaded last night and listened to this about five times today at work. Here are my thoughts!

    1. Intro - So like I said, this was a very impromptu cover haha. Had no plans to do it until like 20 minutes before I started. Really didn't touch up on much of it past the initial takes. Wanted to keep with the punk and get the most "live" feeling possible! Since this was recorded less than 24 hours before everything was due, really didn't have time to get friends over for the gang vocals, so I decided to get creative with the beginning by have the actual track play like its a vinyl or something. The whole beach thing was pretty random, idk, I was very drunk hahaha. Anyway, NFG was my favorite band growing up all the way until about 2007 or 2008. Catalyst came out at the end of my freshman year of high school, literally about a week from the start of summer break. My mom took my to Target immediately when she got home and I bought a copy and two others for friends. Man, I just loved that band so much haha. Like every record prior, I played that thing until it couldn't play anymore. So anyway, it seemed like a good and quick way to pay homage to the band that changed my life in a way that not many have, and set the tone for my first high school summer with this song (apologies for the novel)

    2. @snaps
Love that Taylor got repped twice on this thing! Fun cover. This feels like a more lively version of that Ryan Adams cover record from last year, which is really cool. Just a really solid rock rendition of a classic Talor tune. That lead guitar kills it throughout! Production is on point too.

    3. @Things So Impossible & @DashboardProfessional
So cool that you guys did this one together! Nice addition of drums too, I'm such a sucker for acoustic songs with drums. Quality guitar tone as always, and your voices work really well together. Love the layers toward the end, really pretty sounding stuff!

    4. @elemenohpe
Cool to see this song on the comp! Such a classic late 90's song haha. So crazy how much popular music can shift in such short amounts of time. Anyway, solid cover! Love the fuzzy vocals, really cool effect that I wouldn't have thought to add to this that totally worked! Guitar work is impressive as always, you always bring the shred!

    5. @bradsonemanband
Another song that I'm glad to see made this comp! A true summer classic. Cool rendition, does a really great job of resembling the original while still keeping it fresh with deviated vocal melodies and guitar chord progressions.

    6. We Are Never Getting Back Together - aside from the other song I did for this, this might be the quickest I've ever completely arranged and recorded a song by myself. I messed around with ideas for so fucking long haha, I can't count the number of songs I tried out with all of my fingers combined. I was actually about to drop out of this comp entirely until I was listening to Red at work the other day and it hit me that this song was the perfect choice for me. Summer vibes, song that most everyone would know, and also allows for a lot of interpretation of any kind. Had a blast recording it. There were a couple of things I wanted to add in that I didn't really have time for, but the beauty of having a time limit is learning to become happy with what you created, knowing that it's the best your could've done at that point (apologies for another novel haha).

    7. @Craig Manning
Really solid, straightforward acoustic cover! You can definitely pull it off, stellar vocal performance as always. An enjoyable listen for any fan of the original!

    8. @InfiniteArms
Very neat take on the original! Love the laid back feel. That guitar tone has such a surf-y feel! Production is great, really like how leveled everything is, nothing is too far back or too prominent in the mix.

    9. @phillyfradet
This was the first song I ran into on this comp that I hadn't heard before. Sure has a summer vibe though! You got a really good vocal range man, those low "boardwalks" had to be difficult. Sounds like you're hitting all of those lows and higher notes without any strain. Song itself is pretty cool, has a really loungey pace. Nice work making a song I didn't previously know an enjoyable listen!

    10. @bradsonemanband
DAMN the distortion is real! Hahaha. Jumped a little when it came on the first time. Definitely does the song justice though! Really fun cover. You really brought the variety on this one.

    11. @Benjamin Lee
Really cool song choice! Can tell you had a lot of fun recording this one. Brings a fun vibe to the original. Always hear Lana catching a bunch of crap about being too boring and low energy, you for changed that here!

    12. @TedSchmosby
I actually don't know this Dashboard song! What album is it from? Anyway, you killed this song. Glad you got it in in time. Chris Carraba has a voice not many can match, and you did it pretty much flawlessly. One of the songs I considered for this comp was Saints And Sailors... talked myself out of it very quickly haha. Your voice kind of reminds me of another user here that frequents these comps, that person didn't participate on this one though so you totally filled the void!

    13. @bradsonemanband
Don't know this song, but you sound good playing it haha! Pretty cool hearing a couple of really stripped down contributions from you this time around. It works really well! Sort of inspires me to do something similar for next time!

    14. @therookielot
I don't hear what you mean about going overboard, man. Cover sounds good! Can put my finger on why, but I'm getting a really 90's vibe from some of this. I think it might be grit in your voice at parts? Not sure. But very cool take on an already great song! That screaming at the end was v unexpected hahah

    15. @elemenohpe
Three closers, eh? Not complaining, your covers always leave a great lasting impression. It's pretty clear that you always put a lot of effort into your stuff. Go big or go home, am I right?! I don't know a ton of songs from this HTL, but I totally remember this one! Pretty close to the original, if I remember correctly, which is great because HTL are definitely known for being a summer-y pop punk band! When that last chorus comes in, it sounds huge! The layered vocals at the end are a nice touch, too.

Sorry in advance for typos or words that literally just don't belong at all -- autocorrect and I have no gotten along at all lately haha
