Hahah, that sounds crazy. I can make a rough skeleton in 2 hours, but I spent the whole week on this cover I did and it's still pretty much just a basic, chord heavy pop-punk type song.

 

Okay I've decided. I'm only going to do one song.

I can't believe that I didn't even THINK about this one.

 

I have a very love/hate relationship with the drums at the end of my cover. hahaha I'm sure people will get why when the comp releases.

 

Figured I should just submit this HTL cover so I'll stop fiddling with the mix and start my other song. One down!

 

I recorded all the music to my Lit cover lastnight!

After the upcoming Summer Songs comp, the next 2 will be specific bands. Who would you like to do next?

 

Kind of off topic, but it would be cool to cover a specific album sometime. Like, each participant claims a different track from an album and we try to cover it front to back. If all the tracks were taken and more people wanted to contribute, we could have b-sides or duplicates of a few tracks as bonus tracks.

The main issue I foresee would be low participation or people claiming songs and having to drop out, leaving tracks missing.

 

Exactly.

But I also think it would be a really cool idea and something fun to do. People would have to REALLY commit and follow through.

Spent last night mostly trying to work around NK's "Vacation Days", but pretty much came to the conclusion that I couldn't do that song justice. Then I fooled around with a few Vacationer songs. Eventually landed on something with a totally different vibe but I think I can make it work!

 

Yep. Bummer that this is the case no matter what, it seems. The last few comps have had a few staple songs missing from the tracklists due to dropouts. Been trying to think of a way to get around that issue but haven't been able to come up with anything

 

Yeah, it sucks when staple songs get the shaft because people don't follow through. And when I do the reminder posts, tagging everyone, a lot of the people don't even ever respond. It's like they pick a song that they know someone else will definitely want to do, and then they close their laptop/phone and let them collect dust forever with a sly smile on their face... haha or something like that.

Life happens... It's ok. If I didn't have a personal goal to be on every single of one of these comps, I most likely wouldn't have done the Weezer one after all life stuff that kept getting in the way. So I found two hours and just got it done real quick, haha.

Also, I was JUST thinking about you! I am listening to a band called Girlpool right now, and I was just thinking about how much I'd love to hear you cover one of their songs. It's right in your wheelhouse, I think.

 

Its a tough topic to discuss in here because there's no way to talk about it without sounding like we're all coming down hard on people who just wanted to have fun and participate. I don't blame anyone for having things come up in life, hell I wasn't on a single one of these comps until earlier this year because I could just never set aside the time. The last thing I think any of us wants is to discourage potential contributors.

Hear me out on this one, this idea isn't perfect and could certainly use the perspective of others to shape into a feasible concept, but what if we started enforcing (hate to use that word because it sounds so intense) check ins from everybody? Like maybe we have a set time or periodic set of times during the recording process where we all have to check in. We quote the list of users and give everyone a 24 grace period to respond. If someone doesn't, their song would go back up for grabs. Like not like they're banned from doing it, but someone else could call it and take precedence over the original user.

Thoughts? Really trying to not come off as insensitive or harsh at all, so if this sounds like either one of those adjectives, please feel free to call it out as so.

 

Here comes a huge ramble post:

It's not a bad idea. But I think one of the issues that might be making it hard for everyone to contribute is that the thread sometimes falls down to the second page of the forum and stuff, and maybe people forget about it. Or maybe they just aren't checking this site as often as we are. Who knows?

But yeah, maybe we can have everyone check in with their progress? Like, I tag everyone in a reminder post (like I've been doing) maybe 2 weeks until the due date, and then everyone has a couple days or so to reply to it stating their progress and/or if they have to bail, and then their song would go back up for grabs. But the problem I can see with that is: say I really wanted to cover "My Heart Will Go On" for a Celine Dion tribute comp, but you already called that song, so I pick "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" instead because that's the only other CD song I know, and I get working on it, putting a lot of time into it just so I can make sure to have SOMETHING ready, but then you don't respond to the "progress post" or whatever and it goes back up for grabs, so I decide to take that one again, but only have 1 week or something to do it...

That was a really long run-on sentence. But anyway, I can see it causing some sort of frustration between people. I think when the new compilations are announced, everyone gets excited and starts calling out songs they wanna do. And initially, they're like, "Yeah I can totally do that." But then they never log on to the site again, or they don't check this thread or anything, etc. and then the guys and gals that really want to work on a song are left with less choices, and that's sometimes frustrating.

I am truly rambling and I don't really know what I'm saying, but I do agree that something could probably be done in order for songs to come available again if the person doesn't respond or anything. I've tried saying, "only pick a song if you are actually serious about doing it" but I think that plea gets overlooked because everyone is just excited about the thought of covering their favorite song, or whatever.

I'll stop rambling. Hopefully something in this post makes sense. I'm tired.

I really do appreciate ALL of you that have participated in these compilations! Even if it's just reviewing people's songs or just discussing topics like this. I just love this little community we've got in here. We've done 15 compilations in just a little more than a year, and the vast majority of them have had really good turnouts. That's awesome! I really want to keep people interested in these and keep you guys coming back to do more covers/original songs/etc.

Another thing we should think about: how can we get more people to know about this? How can we keep new recruits coming in and participating?

 

I want to get in on this so bad, but my computer is garbage. @bradsonemanband , that last post of yours gave me a PC load letter.

 

hahaha. it made me realize i do more work on outside-work stuff while i'm at work.

 

@bradsonemanband yeah, I did realize the main problem with my idea was that once the songs become available, it may be too late for someone else. My only thought on that is that, well, at least it still offers up the chance. At this point, it's gotta be equally frustrating for users when they just simply don't have the opportunity at all haha.

Totally know what you mean about the thread getting pushed down on the forum page though. Not sure what we can really do to help that :/

 

The selfish side of me wishes that we could get it stickied so it stays at the top, but i don't know if that makes sense to anyone but us, haha.
