Was listening to the Dig interview with Bhaskar Sunkara recently, and Dan Denvir brought up that the new generation socialists doesn’t define themselves by what the USSR has done. Which bodes well for not even coming close to becoming apologists for awful Tankie and other communist regime crimes.

hey y'all, what online blogs do you keep up with that you consider kind of/really leftist besides the following:

    - dissent mag
    - alternet
    - current affairs
    - jacobin
    - democracy now!

    thanks.

The latter recently posted an interview with Andreas Malm so I’m off to read that now

i sent an email to a couple of leftist online mags proposing a topic that someone else wanted to write about the conditions of assyrians in iraq/syria. it's been over a week. i sent a follow up to jacobin as well.

last week i sent jacobin a pitch responding to that stupid vox piece about the left embracing nationalism and they responded being like oh this sounds good. they asked a few questions and i responded and i haven't heard anything since, despite sending two more follow ups. i understand that their submissions inbox is probably loaded but they fucking suck at responding

Okay yeah I gotta say it what the fuck is Vox, seriously - all I know about them is that Facebook keeps recommending them to me and I saw them on the "garbage" end of one of those "political bias news media checker" charts that was very clearly made by a crusty conservative so what are they?

What do you mean exactly? They're a (generally) liberal outlet if that's what you're asking

As in, they're something I hear people say bad things about so I guess my question is are they a bad outlet in general or am I just hearing opinions from right-wingers who hate anything left of Fox News, lol.

    Silly question, I'm sure.

EHHH i mean, i have problems w/ Vox for the reasons i would a lot of 'liberal' outlets, but yeah, if you're hearing it from RWers it's b/c of their ideological opposition.

Late on this one, but The Baffler is decent. They publish some dumb Angela Nagle stuff sometimes but otherwise they’re pretty solid politically, and also address a wider breadth of topics than Jacobin

Never heard of them! Following them now. Not sure I'll get in touch though, I was outright rejected or ignored by everyone else.

I have a question about something in this article that maybe some more knowledgable Marxists could help me with.

Is the idea here that Russia and China for example turned into autocratic totalitarian regimes because the socialist revolutions happened in primarily agrarian societies? I.e. revolution happening in a more advanced capitalist state would be less likely to develop into autocracy and therefore any socialist society emerging from such a revolution would be intrinsically more democratic?
