Ha, I agree and disagree. Loved the movie, but some parts with him came off as Marvel going "yeah we got Spiderman back" and then proceeded to show him off ha.

Completely agree. I never saw 42, and I've heard his name a ton, but holy wow was he good. Aside from Spiderman, and the Visions journey, Black Panther was the best

 

If Rhodey died, there would have been a lot of outrage. He's been a strong minority presence and a great foil to Iron Man.

As hyped up as Agent 13 seemed, her character was pretty pointless.

 

I do agree with the criticism that they plot should have lingered on the ideological debate longer than it did.

A few stray thoughts on the movie.

- Surprised there was no mention of Hawkeye's brainwashing in Avengers as a facsimile to Winter Solider's brainwashing. Hawkeye isn't responsible for what he did under Loki's control, but Winter Soldier is responsible for what he did under Hydra's??

- Black Panther and Spider-Man were great. I will let go the fact that Spider-Man felt tacked on and unnecessary because he was portrayed so well.

- Zemo found out about the Stark's death because Romanoff released SHIELD files on the internet at the end of Winter Soldier. His whole plot hinges on Tony finding out this information. But, Tony should have already known. In The Avengers, the helicarrier argument is spurred by Tony hacking into the SHIELD database and uploading their files to JARVIS. In Iron Man 3, Tony uses SHIELD's database to search for the Mandarin. Tony has had unrestricted access to the very same databases Zemo used to uncover the Stark murder.

- I loved that there was kind of a jealous sibling relationship between Falcon and Winter Soldier.

- The Peggy Carter funeral wasn't done very well. I should have been near tears, I felt nothing. There is no chemistry between Emily VanCamp and Chris Evans, and there relationship sort of comes off as creepy when you consider the context. I hope this along with Agent Carter not being renewed for a 3rd season doesn't mean we will no longer re-visit the Peggy Carter character.

- I still don't quite understand what Vision is.

 

What does Ant Man say after "this is your conscience"? Couldn't hear over laughter

 

I also wonder:

had the rest of the team gone with Tony to help Cap and Winter Solider, how would the Stark murder reveal change the dynamic? The fact that Cap knew that Bucky killed the Starks and kept it from Tony. Does Lang still back Cap? Does Wanda? Wanda hated Tony in AOU for building the bomb that killed her family, wouldn't she sympathize with him on some level? Does Cap's blindspot for Bucky tarnish his moral authority as the team's leader?

More importantly, what do we think of Cap's decision to keep that information from Tony. To fight along side someone who is withholding important information because of a personal relationship?[/spoiler}

I hope we see this explored in the future.

Yeah I get the feeling I'll be watching 42 and the James Brown movie he did soon.

 

42 isn't bad. Doesn't really stand out as far as biopics go, but he does a good job

 

"We haven't spoken for a while." Whether intentional or not, it's a direct quote from Finding Nemo.

 

Cap recruited Hawkeye and Antman to go to Russia and find the rest of the other winter soldiers because Cap knew that the rest of the Avengers won't lend a hand. They just so happened to be stopped at the airport and got into the big fight there. They weren't supposed to fight Stark's team. At least that is how I piece that part.

Recruiting Spidey though, yeah, while I loved him being there, seems weird to bring a child into a fight with lives at stake. Spidey himself was apprehensive before the fight started, and felt forced to fight because he was already there.

 

Thinking about it, the Winter Soldiers plotlines here were really well done in comparison to Doomsday.

-There is a failsafe trigger word for them to basically de-activate.
-Zemo killed all of them instead of unleashing them on the world without a thought.

Little things like that help me appreciate this.

 

I suppose you can justify Ant-Man in that case - I forgot about the other winter soldiers.

 

Not that it doesn't make it a bad idea to bring a kid, but i think Tony was not expecting a high stakes fight. It was a disagreement between friends and i think his goal was to quickly overpower them, maybe even capture them without a fight

 

I would love them to explore that but I fear that they won't.

 

Did anybody die in the Civil War comics?

 

Yes. Capt America, then Bucky becomes the new Capt.

 

Well that would've been crazy for the Marvel cinematic universe.

 

And much needed in my opinion. In the comics, Crossbones kills him. He was kinda underused in this movie.

 

So much so that I didn't even know who he was till I looked him up just now.

 

An android version of Thor blasts a hole through Goliath's chest.

I don't think Cap died during the Civil War mini. Maybe the epilogue, but not the story proper.

 

You'd think one of those Iron Man blasts would do that sooner or later.

 

haha, yeah. that android Thor killing Goliath was a big moment for the comics. isn't that the scene that afterwards Spidey says to Tony "I thought we were doing this so nobody else would get hurt?"
I was hoping there would be a moment like that in the film, hell, from either side. the trailer made me think so, but i kinda got let down on that front.

 

Plot holes and simple plot device villain aside, this was pretty fantastic. Probably gonna see it a couple more times. I feel like WS told a tighter story, had less excess, and is the better film overall, but this had so many memorable moments. Felt bored a couple times during the quieter stretches, but I need to see the film again when my excitement isn't so heightened.

Action was next-level. Black Panther was great. Spider-Man was great, albeit force-fed. Ant-Man stole every scene he was in. I love Scarlet Witch.

 

okay, so, since we're past opening weekend can we talk about the film without spoiler tags? how long is the proper amount of time to wait to do that?
