This kind of speculation is helping no one

I agree, but, just out of sheer curiosity, not trying to be snide or anything here, what do you think we should do about this since JL is clearly not being held accountable by anyone? I'd rather we keep talking about it and it be speculation than we stop talking about it and let everyone carry on as if nothing happened (brand new were going to break up anyway and they had no friends because they were assholes, so really not much in the natural course of the world has changed here)

People should stop listening to BN and let those fucks fade into obscurity.

It wasn’t hidden though. That’s the entire point. The girl posted the same exact shit on The Front Bottoms tour announcement w/ BN in 2016 and unfortunately everyone chose to ignore it.

People like Diaz, Nolan, Raneri knew it was a ‘long time coming’ and heard ‘plenty’ of stories and evidence.

There was not really much hidden about it.

I agree it’s a dangerous slope to pin knowledge on others and how much they knew or didn’t know, but it was far from hidden.

Honestly, when it all went down the way that Brian Diaz got the ball rolling really rubbed me the wrong way because I personally don't believe victims should be pressured into coming forward if they aren't ready for it/want to do it. Especially in cases like this where deranged fans will literally turn victims' lives into living hells.

So even if people knew and said nothing, well, it’s not really their place to say something. Look at what happened with Pinegrove and that gross statement trying to take control of the narrative away from the victim so the dude could save face and make himself out to be the “nice guy” even while admitting to having abused someone. In these cases, the victims speak and everyone else listens.

Anyone who actually knew and willingly profited off the band is scum, and they’ll have to deal with that forever. But people who heard rumors or insinuations, or who flat-out had no idea (I’m assuming most people didn’t outside of maybe the other band members, maybe) can’t be blamed for not speaking up. It’s not their place. I know if I had ever been assaulted I wouldn’t want anyone else speaking for me, or trying to persuade me to speak if I wasn’t ready to.

If it wasn't hidden it would've been news a long time ago. I don't recall seeing it on a front bottoms tour announcement and never heard about that. I don't know anyone who knew that. If that's your only proof it wasn't hidden I don't know I still believe it's entirely possible most people didn't know.

I don't know if there's much more to do since brand new is done and Jesse is no longer a public figure. Just continue not supporting them and making people aware of what he did who may not know but listen to them. When a band is finished I just don't think there's much else we can do except let it be known what happened so their legacy isnt whitewashed. And if they ever try to come back, raise hell

The comments on Front Bottoms Post was VASTLY discussed on this forum once realized it was the same person. Check the Science Fiction thread. It was talked about on here quite a bit.

It’s not my only ‘proof’ either as I already posted tweets from Nolan and Raneri as well hinting they, and others were aware. People knew but didn’t say anything, which to your original point, probably because they wanted to protect victims, families.

yaaaa not buying this idea that because something was posted on the internet it's immediately well known. I don't really know what people are searching for here anyways, in terms of finding people who knew. don't really even know what that accomplishes. even if his friends had heard small things here and there he could have so easily downplayed it.

This forum isn't that big of a blip in the music community at large. I missed it and I post here. I didn't see it talked about anywhere else.

Nolan and Raneri are from Long Island and probably heard rumors and shit from locals. That doesn't mean everybody everywhere knew

I mean, I never once said ‘everyone’ knew. Big difference between ‘not being hidden’ and everyone knowing.

This all started with someone asking if we thought KD knew and all I said was if people like Diaz, Nolan and Raneri knew, the likelihood of those close to Jessie probably had at least an inkling.

I brought up The Front Bottoms Post because I’m guessing someone from their camp had to have seen the comments on their post.

the girl posted it on the front bottoms tour post for the devil and god post. i saw it, posted it in the thread, a few people saw it, and i deleted it because it felt too much like gossip. only remembered that when someone else who remembered the post reminded me that

i doubt anyone took that post seriously. why is why it took so long in the first place, this happens so often with victims of abuse

Well fair enough I just don't get the point of trying to figure these things out when it's impossible to know. I think better conversations can happen than speculating who knew how much. We should be talking about how to support victims, why what Jesse did is so horrible, ways to move on from their music (some people have had it easy, others less so. im still super dysphoric about this tattoo on my chest and trying to find ways to cope with it until I can afford a solution). This is such an important thing for all of us, for the scene, and I thunk more productive conversations should happen if any conversations are going to happen at all. It doesn't need to be talked about constantly at this point but it should never be forgotten. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say we won't ever forget the enormous let down and disappointment this band ended up being, a band that saved my life

It's not fair to blame people who possibly knew. I'm sure there were rumors he was shitty to girls and cheated on his wife. Which though horrible, is vastly different from him exchanging pics with underage girls and the reality of his crimes.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure @cwhit is saying he deleted when it first happened in 2016 because it was pure rumor. It was then brought up again in the Science Fiction thread (a thread that did not exist in 2016) upon realizing it was the same girl and there was discussion about it.

And although I never said 'a lot of people' saw it, the girl posted it on Facebook, the world's largest website by far. Of course a lot of people saw it. Doesn't mean it became common knowledge by 'everyone' but it certainly wasn't hidden either.

i mean, she posted it in a comment on facebook, with no context. i deleted it because there weren't any rumblings and it felt weird to post a random facebook comment with such crazy accusations out of nowhere. of course, the climate is way different, but back then a random comment didn't mean much. which is exactly why so many women have had their abuse ignored throughout the years

This is pretty much where I’m at. Most people probably knew he was unfaithful and slept around with women, but I can’t imagine anyone knew he was grooming underage girls. Might have heard a rumor here or there in the “she’s not even 18” type of way, but nothing concrete where they knew he was violating the trust of minors the way he was.

And IIRC, we do seem to have a relatively clear timeline on everything at this point. The gross grooming shit seemed to be in that 2002-2012 range. Things were posted here that more or less confirmed the Jesse/Derek sherman wife thing in 2013, and the relationship with the band was already strained at that point. That event ended up being the proverbial straw, and 2-3 years later we got Mene which started the avalanche of new music. What happened in that time period between Sherman leaving and Mene? Based off Jesse’s post, it seems like a lot of therapy and attempts at redemption with his friends and wife that apparently worked, because the band did eventually decide to put new music out together with Mene and the rest, and that also matches up with the timing of his speech at the show about changing and getting better and growing up and etc. Did he admit to the underage girls stuff to any of them at that time? Who knows. But the time line seems more or less visible without much speculation.

I will speculate on one thing: all these issues are the main reason for the large gap between Daisy and SF, and not some mysterious mystique bullshit. The band kept touring with him for the $$$, but refused to make new music. Half way stance there.

I’ve slowly found myself back to a song here and there, but not nearly as much as I used to. I have so many shirts that I used to wear that I feel too weird to wear now. I don’t publicly endorse their music anymore the way I used to all the time. If a curious student who talks music with me ever decides to ask me about them again, I’ve decided I’ll explain to them what happened (appropriately) and then say if they’re still interested in checking out their music, to download it illegally so they aren’t giving money to the band. I feel like shit for the victims, and I feel a little shitty to lose so much of the soundtrack that got me through my hardest times.
