I'd love to see a song other than Play Crack, Tommy Gun, or Sic Transit win Deja

I'll be happy with probably almost any Deja song winning.

 

I think demos should be separate / maybe throw the singles in there? Mene, Nightmare, Out of Range etc?

Yes the demos have a lot of their best songs

 

I think the hardest part would be deciding which version of those songs get to play.

 

actually fuck me nevermind Fork & Knife is one of my favorite BN songs i totally forgot its not an album track

 

My plan, as it has been with al of these brackets is thus: if a b side or anything was connected to an album like a deluxe version it'll be on that albums Bracket. If it was something separate, such as TDAG demos, Mene, etc they'll be in a bonus bracket

The No Seatbelt Song Vs. Soco Amaretto Lime
- Seatbelt is a lesser version of the stuff Brand New did on later albums, everything they try on that song they do much better on Deja and other releases. Soco is an iconic song in Brand New's history that still stands up with a lot of their songs.

Mix Tape Vs. The Shower Scene
- Mix Tape wins for Morrissey reference.

Seventy Times Seven Vs. Jude Law And A Semester Abroad
- Jude Law doesn't get enough love and I'm tired of bros yelling for 70x7 at Brand New concerts.

Secondary Vs. Failure By Design
- Outside of My Nine Rides Shotgun, Secondary might be my least favorite Brand New song ever. Failure By Design was literally created as filler for this album, and I still think Secondary is the worse choice.

Sudden Death In Carolina Vs. Last Chance To Lose Your Keys
- Last Chance To Lose Your Key's main redeeming factor is the story behind the title, but Sudden Death In Carolina is a quality jam.

Honestly, I would prefer if we're doing brackets, that it should be a requirement that you have to express why you pick a song. Seeing so many people post in a row and not even putting enough effort to type the full song titles is just lame.

 

eh, if you feel compelled to or want to discuss why youre making the selection you made thats cool, but i dont think every vote needs a think piece. sometimes its as simple as just liking one song more for no other reason than just sound or taste.

 

Maybe not a requirement, because I get that sometime's it is as simple as liking something more. But maybe something like strongly encouraged, because for at least the later Brand New albums where I have such a hard time picking favorites, I'd be interested to see the reasoning behind people's decisions.

You're both kind of right. My intent in these games is that people discuss why they pick one song over another to spark conversation and revisit old songs. This went really well in the TBS and LP threads. It's how I prefer it played. However, if you just wish to vote and not write it out that's fine too. It all counts.

 

I usually try to give at least some reasoning/explanation, but I don't always have time and I want to get my picks in before the round ends!

I feel you, I fell into that trap with The Wonder Years too and found it hard to dig myself out of.

 

yeah i think the conversation happens anyway once votes are cast while we wait for the end of the round so discussions happen anyway, just maybe not right when a vote is cast
