Gasoline is one of the best Brand New songs imo

Daisy has some of their best... Vices, At The Bottom, Gasoline, You Stole, Sink, Bought a Bride, and Noro are all fantastic

YFW is easily their weakest album, and doesn't even hold up against some of the other great pop-punk albums that were released around that same time, but Soco and No Seatbelt Song are still among some of my favorite Brand New songs. I wish they didn't bury Seatbelt song in their set. I saw them play it quite a few times right around the time Daisy came out, but I haven't seen them play it in years.

    Maybe so, maybe not.

re: 1996 lyrics...being a Long Islander like the band, "we live lives that are rich and blessed, and we'll burn for how we trangress" is one of my absolute favorite lyrics in their entire catalog. I've always seen that as a very pointed critique of how the privilege and opportunity afforded to many people on LI helps to cover for shitty behavior and personality traits.

    I concur.

It's definitely in my top based off the lyrics alone.

Just curious, what song got everyone hooked on BN? Or how did you hear of them?

For me, I saw a promo video on MTV back in 2002 during an episode of "All Things Rock" hosted by the Madden twins. It was a commercial or something promoting YFW and it used Jude Law as the song. I remember thinking there was 2 vocalists in the band for the longest time cause of the way the video was shot and how the vocals in that song are kinda call and returnish.

Anyway, I remember taking to WinMX (or whatever P2P network I had at the time) and downloading "Magazines" and "Failure By Design" the former is still one of my fav BN songs cause it really sold me on the band. There was a girl in my HS named Mariana that I had a huge crush on at the time, and I used to think of her when Jesse would say "Laetitia"

I'll never forget where I was when I first listened to Deja Entendu, we were putting an edition on our house and we had to drive 45 minutes to Home Depot/Walmart cause I lived in Northern Wisconsin at the time and everything was far af. So I picked up Deja at Walmart and while my mom was in Home Depot I listened to it. Sic Transit Gloria was the first song I remember where I actually was able to visualize the story he was telling in my head. It was mind-blowing.

I attended Warped Tour 2003 the following year to see them and ended up meeting Jesse and Vinnie. I was such a fanboy. It was my first concert haha

Me too. Someone was asking me what I thought about Brand News recent song, I thought he meant "Mene" I then had to relisten to IAAN.... i like it less than when I first heard it.

that song is incredibly catchy, melodically it's one of my favorites

i'd love a straightforward mature rocking out brand new, would probably be my second favorite of their records pretty easily if i get a record in the vein of that song

I've made many a posts on this thread on why I think IAAN has one of Jesse's most stellar lyrics. I love that song a lot.

Also, to answer the question on how you got into Brand New, I was first exposed by them through We Are The In Crowd's cover of Sic Transit Gloria.

Woah thats fairly recently! I don't know, I don't think IAAN's lyrics are "bad" but they are IMO no where near anything on TDAG, Deja or even Daisy except for maybe "Bed"

"I want to throw up snakes" is one of my favorite lyrics from the band, so I'm super biased towards it. I love the metaphors that could tie to it.

My first song was the first song on YFW but fortunately I am persistent and also it was better than like. The Story So Far or whatever big pop punk band from early high school

IAAN is a enjoyable tune. Pretty sure that and Mene more or less confirm they're going for an REM-type sound. But who knows?
