If you are genuinely being falsely accused by someone, suing them doesn’t seem like a really “selfish” or “shitty” thing to do. If they want to try and ruin your life, you have the right to make them pay for it. As much as false accusations aren’t common, I think it’s good that there’s a story that makes it clear that making them isn’t without consequence. Just like no one deserves to be abused, no one deserves to be publicly shamed for causing abuse when they didn’t.

They're damaging when used incorrectly, but they exist for a reason. Why would you blame misuse of something on proper use of something? She realistically could've never admitted to lying if all his defense was over a facebook post. Idk.. it seems ridiculous to me to shame someone who's not an abuser for not wanting to be publicly outed as an abuser.

Suing wouldn't be the answer in my opinion, and I can see you people's points. Give me links for me to understand this other mess.

This post proves exactly why a lawsuit in this case was warranted. His career is STILL facing the effects of her false accusations. You literally just said "fuck him" for no reason.

He actually publicly stated that his case should not be used as an example as they are so rare, and that we should not use it as a reason to question victims.

The defamation lawsuit taints it for me. The way I see it she claimed she was raped by Conor, Conor files a million dollar lawsuit, she recants and he drops the suit. That's looks like a settlement, her admission seems coerced by the threat of a lawsuit. Maybe she would have publicly admitted she lied on her own, but we'll never know.

Conor came out after his case and specifically said he hoped that his case was not used to discredit victims though and that we should always believe and support victims / alleged victims even though being falsely accused did a number on him.

And yet it used, just like any other time defamation lawsuits silence accusers. In my opinion rich entertainers should not file million dollar lawsuits against women who have falsely accused them because of the harm it causes in victim blaming culture. If they can prove their case in court they can probably prove it in the public sphere outside of court, right?

    Wishful thinking.

The dude was literally dropped from his label. His career was over. Just like a legitimate victim doesn't deserve to be silenced, he doesn't deserve his image to be forever tainted from BS that literally came out of thin air. Anyone could deny allegations over an online post.. doesn't mean everyone's going to believe it's false.

The lawsuit speaks volumes. Your example of Cosby-- he's a multi-millionaire. Oberst is not. For him to file a lawsuit of that nature is merely protection.

Legitimate abusers could wrongly file defamation lawsuits regardless of his case.

Wait, Oberst filed a lawsuit when he was accused of rape, the accuser admitted she made it up, and he dropped the lawsuit? And we’re mad at him for filing said lawsuit to save whatever career he has left?

really weird stance to take considering everything conor has done/said about the situation since. like. you have to be deliberately ignoring ... everything, to compare the two.

I will ask again, since I just want to get the gist of this from a reliable source that reported this stuff, can anyone provide me a link explaining the situation?

My point is that the power dynamics of a defamation lawsuit in these circumstances delegitimize the result. Conor Oberst had the money to file and prosecute a defamation lawsuit asking for a million dollars, and the woman very likely could not afford to defend herself even if she wasn't lying. To make this enormously burdensome lawsuit go away she had to say that she lied. This circumstance is frightening for legitimate victims and is damaging to them, in my opinion.

I've defended defamation lawsuits in other contexts. Even when you have a good case (that the plaintiff likely can't prove you made a false statement) they are very difficult to defend when there is a big difference in financing. I believe this reality makes them an inappropriate tool for sexual assault allegations, false or not.

Yeah, basically we all got played. Was any of it even real? I related so much to TDAG & thought he was just some brooding, introverted soul who was uncomfortable with the attention. When, in fact, he was using his status to repeatedly abuse women.

Now looking at those lyrics they have a new meaning to me. It’s like “The reason you hate yourself is because you’re actually a terrible person.” So I can’t see myself listening to them again.

What else was he supposed to do, then? I’m very curious to know what you’d consider an appropriate course of action for him that doesn’t involve a lawsuit. Do you honestly believe he would’ve been able to defend himself and salvage his career any other way? I know I sure as hell wouldn’t believe him if he just made some Facebook post or press release saying the accuser was lying. The only reason he still has a career is because she confessed, and the only reason she confessed is because she saw the consequences of her actions. If it came down to only her word versus his, I would’ve believed her, and his career and livelihood would’ve been wrongfully destroyed. I would argue that he only filed the lawsuit to force her to admit she was lying because it was the only thing that would’ve worked.

I have mad respect for the way Conor handled the situation, and I think his response should be the model for anyone who is falsely accused.

This is all wonderful. Agree to disagree. But when you lose your job because somebody approached your boss, family, friends, etc claiming that you raped them when they were 16.. then I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

I'll stand behind victims and women every single day of the week, but in this case, the woman is not the victim. Trying to apply a "one-size-fits-all" reasoning to this situation is illogical.

You're blaming Oberst for being victimized by a woman who lied about sexual assault. If ANYTHING is undermining victims from this case, it's not Oberst's actions, it's the actions that started the entire thing which was a woman falsely accusing somebody.

If Lacey wants to file lawsuits against each of his accusers, then by all means do it.

I don’t think he’s going to like the results though.
