@T.K. 808s & Heartbreak is a seminal album that has influenced the output of many artists. It's a very introspective record that feels both emotive and cold throughout, and these effects are achieved in part by the heavily auto-tuned vocals. It's one of the best and most important albums of the last decade, so I think anyone with an interest in popular music should check it out.

Hopefully 22, A Million will grow on you!

The album sounds like a winter night. The autotune is a part of that. I like it, though I'm afraid my girlfriend will hate it, haha.

    what a waste of wood

Honestly try to imagine Creeks with only Justins untouched voice. It would almost come off as corny. The album version is a perfect mix of emotion and electronic effects. That live version I posted earlier in the thread is done even better.

Vocal embellishment has always been a part of Bon Iver. Justin has always layered his vocals, added multiple harmonies, and applied effects to his voice. Sure, the new record goes even further with it, but it's not like vocal manipulation is a new thing for him.

i thought that in 2016 we wouldn't be hearing "yooo his voice is so good, y the auto tune???" but i guess not.

people would be laughed out of threads if they ever asked "why is there distortion on the guitars"

I dunno, I think it's a legitimate opinion to have if you don't like the artistic choices here, but that said, the vocal manipulation on this album as well as his past work is clearly done with purpose. Still think it's ok not to like that, though.

"but the acoustic is so nice, why even have an electric?"

it's not a problem if you don't like the artistic choice, it's the automatic opinion people have that auto-tune is used because the vocalist can't hit the notes or whatever.

theres a difference between not liking the artistic choices and thinking hes using autotune to cover his mistakes. "he has a great voice why is he using autotune" is different than "i dont like the choice to use autotune." one recognizes the point of the autotune, one does not.

I guess I interpreted T.K.'s comments more that he doesn't like the artistic choices (even though he did say "he has a great voice", so who knows) but I absolutely see what you're both saying.

Yeah I also only read the first post and then replied.

Apologies to @T.K. if I came off as attacking you. It wasn't just your post in particular but more in response to the general idea of auto-tune that I've been hearing for the past better part of a decade.

It absolutely would not be corny. It just wouldn't fit this album's aesthetic.

Idk seems weird to ridicule someone over an opinion but what else is new we've all done it.

This might be my favorite BI record at this point

well i dont see anyone really ridiculing him in particular just the idea that autotune isnt valid which was clarified thats not what he was saying and he was apologized to. so im a little confused.
