not really sure how I feel about this album yet - but goddamn 10 deathbreast is probably one of my favorite tracks released this year

I realized while listening to "33 God" that Prince would have loved this album. And then I was kinda sad

 

After seeing a

Justin is a huge Prince fan. His tweets on the day of his death were both heartbreaking and inspiring.

 

Yeah you can totally tell. One of the masters of vocal manipulation back when it was really hard to do.

I put this on my girlfriend's phone and she thought he was still a cabin folk dude and now she's texting me listening to it about how amazing it is

Just listened via vinyl and read along through the song book. So much adoration for the significance of every little detail.

 

I kind of wish Death Breast was longer. It's an amazing song but the ending always feels abrupt to me. That may become something I forget about with time but I don't know.

Still in my top 5 from the album, though.

 

I've never listened to Bon Iver. I'm really into S.Carey though who is in Bon Iver. Are they similar?

 

You will definitely enjoy some of Bon Iver's music if you like S.Carey.

 

29 #Strafford APTS has become a clear favorite at this point.

What's the point of so much auto tune?
Vernon has such a great voice and he just overuses autotune and
distorts the whole album/songs.
It bums me out.

 

I am absolutely sure I'll have mild to moderate regret tomorrow from most of my actions, but this made me smirk/briefly laugh. Anyway, I still feel that my complaint is not entirely neutralized by my shitty presentation of it. Who knows though. Whoops.

 

You said "Vernon has such a great voice and he just overuses autotune" as if it's only ever used to make up for a lack of vocal ability. It's not. In many cases, it's an artistic choice to use it. It's crucial to the sound of 22, A Million, which is clearly a departure from his previous work. If you think it "distorts" the songs on here, I can't help but think you've missed the point of this record.

Have you ever listened to Kanye's 808s & Heartbreak?

 

I promise I will revisit this tomorrow when I'm in a more sober mindset haha and I promise that I'm not trying to troll at all. I don't know if I said that "he just overuses autotune", (perhaps I did, I'll check tomorrow) but I do feel there's numerous parts on the album that it subtracts from the song for me personally. I understand that it fits within the overall feel of the album; however, I think his voice works so well and that autotune takes away some of the beauty (especially the areas where the singing can't be understood) if that makes sense?

I haven't. do you recommend it?

 

@T.K. You should definitely check out 808s & Heartbreak if you're curious about how autotune can be used to create particular moods/effects. It's just like any other instrument. Have a read of this too (Bon Iver is mentioned), it's about the album and is a very interesting read. It may help you to appreciate 22, A Million a bit more.

 

I have to learn to keep up with technology haha (that makes me sound olddd as fuck), but @Letterbomb31 I'll try to check out the album. I just finished reading that wiki excerpt, so it was Kayne that initially shaped that style? Anyway, I do agree with you that vocals/autotune can be used as an additional instrument to shape and create music. I guess I just feel it's a bit overkill at points (similar to Imogen Heap), but at times it's very moving in context of the song. I can't articulate very well right now so sorry for any redundancies.

All of this said, it took a little bit for Bon Iver, Bon Iver to hit me as well. Now I love it. Hopefully this happens with 22, A Million because I love how much that album has connected for most people here
