I like Edging but I feel like it sticks out from the pack stylistically. It feels like it was written way before the album (which I assume it was!).

Interested to see how it fits on the album.

Hard agree and I'm fully on-board! This song just feels fun to me.

And that riff is... It's Dude Ranch vibes without feeling like a re-tread. I'm so stoked on this.

I could have articulated that better. I wasn't implying their songs never have deeper meaning, or that they're poorly written. But when I think about some of my favorite tracks of theirs lyrically? They aren't complicated with how things are worded but you really feel it (which is a skill in and of itself). What I was trying to say is that simple and straight-forward doesn't equate to bad. Like, I think "Wendy Clear" and "Lemmings" are both masterpieces because of the way they romanticize relatively simple life moments (with complex emotions behind them--that are implied rather than clearly stated).

For the second bit there about certain lyrics being "embarrassing" or whatever... That's such a case-by-case thing that I find it hard to have a consistent take. A big part of it, for me at least, is reflecting on whether the artist is trying to tell a story, evoke a feeling, or some combination of the two. And with Blink, I think sometimes it presents as a narrative when really they're going more for a vibe/feeling (if that makes sense). So I think that's part of it. And I "get it" from that angle, I guess... Because I also have certain songs of theirs that I don't listen to much as a result. But I also don't let it bother me. I just disagree with the artistic choice and move along.

All that said, I also think it's weirdly judgmental to say that because a person is of a certain age they should feel "embarrassed" for any emotions they might be working through. Or that certain rhyming choices are "juvenile." There's obvious exceptions, I guess, and certain things that people might not connect with, don't enjoy, etc... But it always strikes me as strange when people claim they can't relate to songs about angst or frustration anymore.

Anyway. BRB. Gotta go listen to a pop-punk song that rhymes "caffeine" with "nicotine."

  6. I just think the lyrics are bad and the songs show absolutely no artistic/sonic growth since the last time they released a project together (2012). They get a half of a star for the lyrics to the title track at least being about what they went through as a band. If it was Matt Skiba instead of Tom I think people would be quicker with the California comparisons, but that's what this sounds like to me. California with Tom singing.

  7. I also just cannot get over the lazy engineering on the title track. It shows a lack of care. I am enjoying the perspectives of others who enjoyed the songs more than me.

I honestly would LOVE to see what reddit would become if Skiba threw some Olés in his blink songs lol.

I can totally hear him too.

    More than you know
    Dance With Me
    Edging
    One More Time

    For me.

Also, I love how bands are releasing new singles nowadays. It helps maintain the excitement and anticipation over an extended period. It doesn't diminish the enchantment of listening to an album for the first few times, personally.

  12. I mean, respectfully, there is a line sung by Tom in the first verse that causes the AutoTune to glitch out. It's extremely noticeable, and in my opinion it could have used more attention to detail. 5 minutes in Melodyne would fix it.

As a Bouncing Souls superfan it's illegal for me to say anything negative about the use of Olés in any song ever. Delonge or Skiba, I'd have to support it, regardless.

I really feel like I'm 16 again: I'm hanging out on message boards after school talking about blink and I'm waiting for my mom to yell : ¨Diner !¨

Except I am now the teacher and well, I have to get up my ass and cook for myself.

Love when someone's used Logic Pro a dozen times and thinks they are a world-renowned producer/engineer...

Anyway, this song is so fun and full of an energy that, IMO, the band has been missing for quite some time.

Love when people think you need an engineering degree to have an opinion when something doesn't sound right to them

Sure, it just comes across a certain way when a listener hears something and claims it as a rookie mistake when it was passed through dozens of professionals in the industry, and given the go-ahead multiple times by the artist... It's how they wanted it to sound. It's cool if people don't like it. But acting like it's a mistake seems dumb to me. Sorry!

No need to be sorry! I do get where you're coming from.

I guess the way I see it is similar to my job as a software engineer. I could introduce a bug to my code that a dozen other engineers code reviewed before I pushed it out to production. My customer doesn't need to be a coding expert to feel that something isn't working right

  19. I actually have an Audio Engineering degree. Sorry I forgot to show it to you before I commented on a blatantly obvious mistake. If it was on purpose? Bad creative decision.

I don't usually notice vocals or pay attention but it almost sounds like his vocals on DWM are pitched up. He sounds younger for sure.

  21. Something positive: the actual vocal mixing is very good. Probably the best and most "alive" their voices have ever sounded.

I’m just casual blink fan with zero knowledge about production etc.

I just really do LOVE these new songs.
    I liked California too.
    I did not like NINE.

Tom has already been pretty vocal that he feels at peace not being the most prolific or proficient artist but that blink has always been about conveying feeling. He just seems comfortable making a kickass punk album that hits in 2023. It's all subjective whether people like it or not but it confuses me when people expect a magnum opus for dudes in their 50's making pop punk music. This music rips when compared to other legacy bands this far into their careers. I don't disagree OMT sounds adjacent to what they did with a ballad on California. I think that song is all about conveying an idea more than making an amazing pop song. Tom specifically talked about their impulse to make it huge or have a giant built, but pulling back and leaving it as is. It's not my favorite Ballady song from them, but it hits pretty hard as a statement of where they are at as a band, and it's a really cool marker in time for the era of the band.

I think, at least for me, it’s just the magic of the three of them together. There is virtually no reason I shouldn’t love California and NINE, but somehow I don’t. I don’t return to them or care about them.

Dance with me is awesome. This album is 4/4 in my eyes.

I like the Oles. They work with the song. Catchy as fuck chorus

Can confirm DWM is a dance around the kitchen and sing while doing housework song
