Green Day has more of an “old band” factor to them, even though Blink got big not much later than them. It’s 14 albums seem - let’s not pretend like they were expecting giant numbers.

Any thoughts/opinions as to why? I know they have been coming off some bad to eh to terrible albums but they are still a big name band and their singles seemed to be well received. They have been doing press everywhere too. Most importantly the album is good too.

I moved from SoCal to the east coast a year and a half ago and I feel like I’ve already aged 5 years.

Let's not pretend Tom isn't pulling some strings with his cosmic comrades to influence the course of human history for his own personal gain.

Mark just seems like he embraces and cultivates life as it is today while supporting the younger/up and coming folks. It shows in his hobbies, the music he listens to and supports, along with the people he hangs out with and is friends with.

I’m sure Billie does it to an extent but he’s definitely on record talking about how him and the band are old school when it comes to stuff like social media. Plus, I mean….look who they get to support on their tours compared to blink.

Green Day is just unappealing these days. Every song lately sounds the same to me and feels so hollow. OMT feels genuine and like it's the heart of the band (reborn).

Excatly how I feel about the new record…it’s just there.

OMT on the other end…*chef’s kiss

  8. I dunno, probably quite a few reasons. The singles never crossed over in the same way, they did ok on Alt Radio but didn't have anywhere near the same online buzz. "American Dream" did ~3m YT views. OMT did 20m.

I also think the tour package is kind of a dud. I don't think there's a lot of cross over appeal, and instead of being able to ride the same wave others have it kinda looks like an uncool dad rock show.

I think the biggest hit though is that from the trilogy onward that's a run of 5-ish albums that turned off casual fans to even check them out, you know? Years of general apathy?

Wonder if this can last another 5 weeks and break Feel It Still's record for most consecutive weeks at #1.

Anyone know of someone that won one of the 50 test pressings for this? In desperate need to complete my collection.

Pretty surprised by how well One More Time is doing but at the same time it's not like they have any real competition in that space right now

If Blink is ever going to win a grammy it will be this year.

Casually listening to the album and always have to turn it up a few clicks for More Than You Know and Turpentine. Can't wait to witness those live.

I think you are right, for casual listeners Green Day has been releasing kind of dull music for too long to care at this point.

One of the “problems” I think GD has is that it relies too much on Billie Joe, musically and publicity wise.

If you compare them to blink, Mark, Tom and Travis are 3 huge creative forces, with their own stories, projects and own fan base. Their music is a clash of that and also their personal journey. Billie Joe has to carry all the weight.

I think Travis being incredibly active in music and having a strong celebrity profile helps a ton too. Green Day had the Broadway show a while back but Tre Cool isn’t showing up on big records in multiple genres and Mike Dirnt isn’t married into Taylor Swift’s family and part of her extended reality show empire. GD have aged gracefully but not without some fallow creative periods as themselves in their own corner of rock music.

  16. I have had a pet theory for a long time that Green Day aren't seen as "cool" because only Billie actually is. Like, he's the entire band's cool personality at this point and, yeah, I dunno, I think that could be a part of it.

More general excitement over the Blink 182 album. I have been going through their discographies a lot recently and, while I love GReen Day more and think their peaks are higher, Blink seems to do better with quality control.

I think the main factor is for the majority of millennials, Green Day have always been big rock stars for their entire life. Blink had the "underdog" element for a bit which I think makes them seem more relatable.

Even the side projects are the three of them! Mike is the classic silent guy and to be honest I can’t stand Tre, so I agree with your theory a 100%.

Blink is also just on this side of the emo pop punk divider. It seems like the more emo-leaning stuff has more lasting cultural power than the more old school ska/punk/hardcore side.

I mean, while Mike is easily the biggest influence and main inspiration for me on bass, hasn’t he come out as antivax? Not a great look. Probably better to keep a lower profile these days.

Tre is great in Green Day, but I don’t really see home outside of that context.

All of blink pop up in various contexts. I am sure more people know the names of Mark, Tom, and Travis be knowing all Billie Joe, Mike and Tre.

    Things have changed.

Mike's wife is an antivaxxer and RFK supporter. Not sure him about individually.

Valid distinction. But still not great to be associated with that.

Mike should wife swap with Cheryl Hines and end the great collective comedy & pop punk fan cognitive dissonance.
