I'm pretty sure non blink fans hate blink. I'd say most people see them as a joke.

  2. Kuts has really really good song writing.

It always cracks me up how people from the ap.net community were criticizing people 6 years ago for wanting blink to go back to their old sound. Fast forward to today, and they are defending the hell out of them going back to their old sound. I really don't mind what kind of songs they play, as long as they're good. I enjoy California for what it is, but it really seemed like a dumbed down version of blink. Album reminds me of the first (?) We Were Promised Jetpacks album, in that I couldn't believe how many of the songs intros start off wayyy too similar. Bored to death, SOOHM, No Future, and San Diego. Could've used a bit more creativity

Edit: I know they focus more on vocals/harmonies and less on guitar riffs for the album, but still.

I would say a lot of that is because of Tom Delonge. I remember when I was younger, my dad who was a big classic rock guy would always say he didn't mind their music but couldn't stand the singer cause he sounded like a whiny brat. Other non blink friends our own age i've known agree. So now that Tom's gone, people see them as more legitimate? That would be my take away as to why now with a mediocre album they were nominated for a grammy.

And for the record I do like most of California. Production quality is top notch and fits their sound. Just a few clunkers scattered throughout and I could do without the 14 year old potty humor jokes. Mark is hilarious on twitter. He's capable of writing funny shit with an adult sensibility if they were that determined to include jokes at all.

California is fine. I like the idea of it more than the final product though. My least favorite blink album, but it's got some good shit on there.

  7. Is it good enough for a Grammy, or even a nomination? Absolutely not. BUT i'm so stoked for the band, and especially for Matt. Matt's musical career is criminally underrated and has never gotten the mainstream attention its deserved, so this is a huge win for him, even just being nominated for a Grammy. I can't imagine how he must feel. I only hope that his musical contributions will be more welcomed on the next Blink album, if they continue working together. There is a real lack of Matt's creativity on California.

I never liked Boring but yeah Degenerate and Voyeur are pretty bad now. I'm hot and cold on I'm Sorry too.

I love both Sekrets albums but I don't listen to either as much as I should.

Yeah a lot of people don't like Tom's voice but I think the WMAA video basically made them out as a joke to people too (as well as their actual joke songs). I know I've seen them say they regret doing it now. Also people (jerks) see them as a relic from the 90s and say "oh they're still around?" or whatever. I should stop reading about them outside of here haha.

Sometimes I feel like I need to stop reading about them anywhere lol. All I know is that this year especially, a fun summer album was exactly what I needed from them.

  11. I think the WMAA video branded them as "the naked band." But I think the video for "All The Small Things" is what deemed them a joke band.

For better or worse I suppose, because it was also those two videos that launched them into another stratosphere, out of the more obscure punk/alternative scene, helping to create the machine that is Blink 182. I'm not convinced the music alone would of been enough to allow them 20+ years of main stream attention. If these videos were never made and they never became TRL mainstays, I'm not sure the band's trajectory would have been the same (though I'm sure many of the true fans would be perfectly OK with that outcome). They have plenty of hit singles and everything but it was the pranks, the sophomoric humor, and the embodiment of their "what's my age again" hook that made this band so accessible to a generation of fans.

So I'm seeing them again on Sunday. Really hoping to finally hear She's Out of Her Mind + San Diego since those weren't played last time. Also hoping they bust out I Won't Be Home For Christmas since they did at this same event 5 years ago!

Same boat as you, seeing them Sat and really hope they play SOOHM and IWBHFC. They're playing another radio xmas show tomorrow night, can't decide if I wanna check out the setlist or just wait the extra 2 days and surprise myself.

  18. If there was more of Matt's creativity on the album it really would have been a great album. That stretch of Home,Kings and Teenage really keep it from being a great album. Those three songs had Mark written all over it.

It's one of the most creative songs on the album in that it deviates from their core sound. Mark sounds awesome on it too.

I like those songs though :( though granted not as much as Cynical through No Future stretch

I think between the music videos, joke songs and on stage banter it definitely helped and hurt the band. Non fans thought they were a joke and didn't take them seriously because of it while fans loved them for it because it was part of their charm. I don't think they would be as popular without the WMAA and ATST music videos.

Haven't really been in this thread the past couple of months, but I'm pretty shocked to see how much everyone has turned on the album. I mean, it's a pretty straightforward album so I figured it wouldn't hold the excitement for 6 months or so, but it's weird to see so many people calling it a disappointment now after everyone was soooo pumped when it came out.

It's the same as Neighborhoods for me in a way: some of the songs on it are top-tier blink with a few I think they should have left off. Many more skip tracks for me on Neighborhoods though.

I can understand expecting more from Mark Hoppus and Matt Skiba but it was a fine starting point for this lineup. I still really love the record, probably will be in my top 3 this year. That stretch of Home through Satellites really kills the momentum of the album a bit, but I think people calling it garbage as a whole is quite over the top. It's not Untitled, and doesn't compare to Mark's stuff on Dude Ranch, but it's pretty in line with everything else blink has done to me. I know it's missing Tom the arpeggio king lol. Idk I call it my 4th favorite blink record, which is more than I could've hoped for from a new lineup of blink honestly, even as much as I love Skiba. For me Bored To Death, Cynical, San Diego and Left Alone are their best songs since 2003 IMO. I'd easily take those over anything on Neighborhoods and DED. Still really like most of Neighborhoods though.
