DUDE - this is very close to my order and all the descriptions as well, kind of freaked me out when reading it haha.

I would out TOYPAJ at #1 though just because of nostalgia and the transition to middle school to high school was the best time of my life.

How old are you if you don't mind me asking - and did you grow up in the midwest (only asking bc of the Bulls pic)

Reminiscing on old blink album memories...

In 7th grade or 8th grade, in German class - our teacher played 5-6 songs on his stereo in the classroom and he played 30 seconds of each track or so and then we had to describe what the people in the crowd would have looked like. We had a fairly young teacher at the time who was "cool" and he actually played 30 seconds of "Online Songs" (yes, I do not know why he didn't play a single) - and a girl in the class raised her hand and said "people at this show would be dressed just like Ryan, same shorts and shirt. - I wore a Hurley shirt and dickies everyday to school, I felt cool as fuck that day needless to say haha.

I'm a very casual blink fan and I never really listened to them growing up. This album is catchy pop punk which means I'll be listening to it a lot, probably. One thing I haven't seen anyone talk is the fact that some songs sound lyrically like they should be 5SOS or One Direction songs (Sober, Teenage Satelites, Kings of the Weekend, etc.) they are catchy and enjoyable and I have no problem with those types of songs. And I get it, this is Blink-182. It's just that they sound a little disnegenious from three men in their 40s.

    Anyway, I like the album.

I agree! I said that in my long winded review. It's not that I think the lyrics on older blink records are much different or better, i'm just 10-15 years older. But there are only a couple songs on this album where it really stood out and or bothered me.

For whatever reason listening to this album over the weekend made me feel like I needed to write a very long rant of Blink's influence on me and a sort-of review of this album. Note that I'm not a professional music blogger but I wish I could write like Jason Tate, or Drew, or Thomas....(Sorry if this is too long for a forum post)

After listening to the leak today at least 12 times I feel that I have so many thoughts on this album that some tweets or Facebook posts just won't do justice. Let me preface this by saying that no other artist/band has affected my life more than Blink-182, so my thoughts may vary from that of a casual fan.

I've been hooked on this band since Enema of the State, their first album that I purchased saving my allowance as a kid. This band was exactly what I needed at that point in my life. They had a different sound and their music videos parodied the popular boy bands of that era in music. I immediately had to own every album prior to Enema, including a bootleg digital of Flyswatter. I remember when Take Off Your Pants and Jacket came out I went to multiple record stores to find every color variant of the album (red, green, and yellow). That particular album helped me get through some of the most difficult times in my life and was the soundtrack to some of the best times. I had to only wear their clothing brands (Famous Stars and Straps, Atticus, and Macbeth) and even went as far as dying my hair and painting my nails black like Tom did back then. I'm sure my parents and sister remember this. If you did not like Blink-182 we probably were not friends in high school. Does anyone else remember the Atticus "Dragging the Lake" albums that were sold at Hot Topic during that time? Those albums got me into so many different bands that I still listen to today... Alkaline Trio (coincidence?), Finch, Midtown, Sugarcult, The Starting Line, The Used, Jimmy Eat World, Kut U Up, Yovee, Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, Rise Against, Matchbook Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Motion City Soundtrack just to name a few.

Untitled is still one of my all time favorite albums to this day. I was devastated when they first broke up after that record; mainly because I had not seem them live. Eventually I got over this because Tom had started Angels & Airwaves and Mark and Travis had +44 and I loved both of these bands. Since I had never seen Blink live I made sure that my first concert was Angels & Airwaves on their first tour with Taking Back Sunday. A couple of years later I hear that Blink-182 is getting back together at the Grammy's. Once it was confirmed on the show and that tour was announced I made sure that my friends and I had pre sale tickets and we were the very first row in the pit. That was a show that I will never forget. It was massive and being that close to my favorite band was incredible. I've met Tom Delonge twice now, once at Warped Tour and again at an Angels & Airwaves LOVE tour VIP event. Both times he was genuinely nice and took the time to talk to each fan and take pictures. I always admired that he did this even though those fans, including myself, had paid to be a part of his Modlife platform to gain that access.

Fast forward to 2015 and drama in the Blink-182 camp starts again. Tom decides that his science fiction side projects are more important than continuing with Blink, who were scheduled to begin recording again. Next Mark and Travis announce that Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio will fill in for Tom during their shows they had scheduled, one being Travis' own music festival. I was very skeptical of this lineup change even though I love Alkaline Trio. After hearing "Bored to Death" for the first time I realized that this could actually work out. And now here we are upon the release week of California with Matt being a member of Blink-182, and still not knowing the entire story of what happened with Tom. Travis has mentioned in interviews that they've talked and that they support whatever Tom does. Tom keeps letting everyone know that he never quit Blink-182 and that he is still a member of the band, and that he has discussed touring and recording music with Blink again in the future. I'd like to note here that it's strange to me that he seems to only be talking to Travis. Mark never mentions talking to Tom and seemingly always avoids the topic if possible in interviews. Within the last 24 hours the new album, California, has leaked and I've spent enough time with the album that I'm ready to discuss this new era of my favorite band and my thoughts on the album.

Even though Blink-182 released three songs before the album release I was not sure what to expect from this album. I really enjoyed "Bored to Death", but I was not a fan of "Rabbit Hole" and especially not a fan of "No Future". So as I started adding the album to iTunes today and "Cynical" came on I was shocked. It's a short, fast, and really great intro into the album. Travis kills it on the drums (as usual) and Matt's voice sounds great. It's really catchy and transitions great into "Bored to Death". "She's Out Her Mind" is ready for radio and I could easily see it being their next single. The chorus is still stuck in my head. I really started hearing John Feldmann's influence in "Los Angeles" and throughout the rest of the album. I know Tom initially made a comment about not wanting to work with a producer like John, but I think he brought out the best possible sound with Matt being in the band. "Sober" seems like it could have been written for any radio band and feels more like an All Time Low song. "Built This Pool" is great because it reminds me of the joke songs from The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. As I mentioned before I don't particularly like "No Future". I remember in one of Travis' interviews he said there was a song on the album that some fans would probably think was written about Tom. This is definitely that song. This song would be better without Matt's verse near the end. That brings us to "Home Is Such A Lonely Place", my personal favorite from this album. It would easily fit on the Untitled album or even as a +44 song if Mark sang every verse. They lyrics are great and I really wish Blink had more songs like this on the album. "Kings Of the Weekend" and "Teenage Satellites" are both safe rock songs that probably could have been left off the album. Skiba's vocals on "Kings Of the Weekend" sound more like an Alkaline song than his pop-punk Blink sound. I really like "Left Alone" and it has Travis' signature drum sounds throughout. The back and forth vocals between Mark and Matt are great on this track. The next track, "Rabbit Hole" was the second song released by the band from this album and it surprised me. It's not the same sound as "Bored to Death" and I feel that if it were the first song released we would see different sales numbers for their tour. It's not that it's a bad song, it is just not as good as most of the other songs on the album. "San Diego" could have easily been on Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. "The Only Thing That Matters" has the most Feldmann influence with that fast 90's pop-punk sound but I could see them playing this one live a lot in the future. The title track, "California" is great and should have been the last song on the album. Not sure who had the final say on "Brohemian Rhapsody" being the closer but it could have fit in better midway through the album.

All in all I really think this album will exceed many people's expectations of a Blink album without Tom Delonge. It is best to go into your first listen with this album without thinking about the lineup change. There are going to be fans who can't move on with the band without Tom, and I thought I would be one of them. The first two times I listened to this album I couldn't help but think how much more I would like it with Tom's vocals instead of Skiba's. After the third listen I was hooked and haven't been able to listen to anything else, granted it's only been a day. California has lived up to the hype that Blink has put behind it and I can't wait for the show in Greenville, SC on August 3rd! I'm hoping that since this album will have been out for a month that I'll get to hear more of these songs live.

I've been wondering about this. I've always assumed as much with their past material, but I haven't been able to find any information on it.

I just went back and listened to EOTS for the first time in a very, very long time. "Going Away to College", "Dysentery Gary" and "Anthem" are top notch Blink-182.

DUDE I'm 28 and have lived in Indiana my entire life haha - it all makes sense!

I live up in Michigan during summer time so I still get all the beach/water vibes that kids got out on the coasts and shit - but everything you wrote resonated with me haha

You know you're not the only kid who grew up with them but its awesome to hear/read how others around the same age as you that you don't even know were doing the EXACT same shit....listening to them in the same situations - before school dances, dicking around with friends, making out to certain albums, etc - puts a smile on my face haha

But very weird, I learned my first song on gtr in 7th grade too ( Dammit though)

    Travis on TMZ -

Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker discussed Tom DeLonge’s status with Blink-182 in a new interview with Rock Sound magazine.

Mark said, “Legally we are still finalizing our deal with Tom, so I guess legally he is still a member of the corporation that is Blink-182, but that’s not really what I consider being in the band Blink-182, and he certainly has not participated in the band in any manner in almost two years or whatever it is now. So I think when people say Tom is still in Blink-182 it’s more of a legal thing.

Travis added, “Never say never but for this point in time, yes, it’s done…but I never rule anything out. I don’t have anything against Tom. I love him as a friend, he’s a good guy and great songwriter, but he was gone for over a year and during that time we played three amazing shows with Matt, and wrote this incredible album together…”

I second this - however, I will keep the entire album on my phone and most likely will grow into it as a whole over time but I can definitely get behind this.
