I'm a person who spends a great deal of time getting to know my students and what they like as well as a person who has spent even more time listening to, writing about and discussing music.

Why wouldn't I recommend albums that had a great impact on my life to my students rather than pushing this nonsense?

  2. Hence why I can't for the new Rancid album and the Hot Water album as well.

  3. even at their worst, Alkaline Trio was still great. i still can get behind a few TA songs.

Well I chose the wrong word then, if you want to be a snob about it. I mean more they're about the course or what you'd expect. And even if I meant equal, that would be my perogative.

Again, I completely disagree. I value lyrics in songs and while blink never really reaches the bar of a ton of other bands, they were still personal and relevant enough to have an effect on my life. The lyrics to this song are stale, manufactured and impersonal. And that has been on par with everything released on this deluxe edition.

I understand people's concerns but I feel like it's getting way too testy up in here over a blink deluxe edition bonus song lol.

A continuation of the band having fun writing a lot of songs in less than a year. I honestly was not expecting much to blow me away from the deluxe. Now if on the next album they continue with this? I'll get it.

I'm sure their bank accounts don't mind.

I forget who said it in this thread but yeah blink in 2017 aren't writing music for their old fans, it's for the next wave of blink fans in junior high and high school growing up. When we were growing up we got Dude Ranch, Enema and TOYPAJ, these kids are getting California and the Deluxe Edition.

Hopefully the next album they take some risks bit even if they don't I'll probably still enjoy the album because when I listen to blink I'm just trying to have fun and shut my mind off from daily life. I'm not looking for deep lyrics or deeper meanings to songs. There are other/better bands out there for that. Blink has never been that band for me which is probably why I've never gotten worked up over their lyrics.

  8. This Addiction was some of Matt's weakest stuff, but Dan really has some bangers on it.

  9. Blink has become a "safe" band, and it's fine. it is what it is.

this song rules. i've listened to it like 5 times already this morning.

Now we're accusing people of being snobs for using the actual definitions of words.

Besides the Untitled album, haven't blink always been a 'safe' band?

Impersonal is a pretty good way to describe it. It doesn't really feel like these songs are about anything, save for a few. Listen to the songs on Enema, as bad and as stupid as those lyrics are, and there's an actual sense that they were written with a purpose in mind. Maybe that's nostalgia clouding things, but that's been a huge sticking point for me in this version of Blink.

Yeah This Addiction is probably the only Trio album I liked Dan's songs more than Matt's. After reading Dan's ranking of the Trio albums it's no surprise why this album was probably their worst.

It's an odd perspective to have that an artist would write a song "for" anyone. The question was posed a few pages back whether or not they're a novelty act at this point. If they're making music "for" anyone that isn't themselves, then the answer is yes and comes across as completely hollow and a cash grab.

The reason I like Dude Ranch so much is because it didn't appear to be written "for" anyone but themselves. It was personal, it dealt with specific themes or ideas in their own lives, and it showed by how much it connected by my own life. Making a "blink sounding" riff and then throwing in overused metaphors that don't even flow well together into a song just kinda seems like a bad way to make music. Why would anyone want to listen to that?

  17. No, I'd say that's accurate. There a few on California that actually feel personal (HISALP, California, San Diego), but the rest feel like they're vague and not really about any personal experiences. In general, that's fine with me. But I do agree that it's better when the lyrics are actually personal even if they're imperfect.

  18. From what I gather Matt was still into drugs at the time too. It just seemed like they really weren't on the same page.

Cynical was pretty personal if I remember what it's about correctly

  20. they've always been safe enough, but they still were immature and offensive to parents and stuff, haha. but now they're just safe. there's like what? 2 bad words on California? like, i guess by "safe" i mean "unoffensive and accessible" or something. i don't know. it doesn't really matter. they're just watered down versions of their former selves. yeah, that feels more accurate.

Exactly, I'm not going to defend any of the lyrics as particularly enlightening or profound, but they at least kind've made sense or had a theme. They were written like songs, not chopped up vague ideas strewn together over a melody. Even their raw, early immature shit had relatively coherent ideas

  22. words. you know words. you use the best words.

Nothing wrong with recommending music you feel passionate about, but deciding what others should and shouldn't like just because you don't like it seems a bit much.

They can listen to whatever they want. When they come to me for recommendations, which they do, I will steer them away from this. I have one student who calls blink his favorite band. I've had plenty of discussions with him about how weak the new songs are compared to their earlier stuff. I told him to listen to the Menzingers instead.

  25. I was watching the Other F Word doc again. I love when Mark says the best part about being in a band is that everyone has such low expectations of him at being a father aha.
