It's funny that Tom name drops Travis when he still doesn't even follow him. The whole thing does feel force and contrived.

You guys bum me out with how you guys attack Tom. You are starting to be just as bad as the Tom bots. I just don't understand how you can have a personal vendetta against someone you don't know. This thread makes me sad sometimes.

 

Also, you guys don't know what goes on the behind the scenes. Maybe Tom and Travis have been working something out.

 

Potentially but I highly doubt it. I mean they could, but given the track record of Tom and the kind of issues that could cause between Mark and Travis ala BCR I don't find it likely. I think it may be more pandering to fans then anything (don't get me wrong that's not a bash at Tom just an observation).

 

Agreed, the majority of his fan base are there because of his music so he needs to throw them music bread crumbs every now and then to let them know he will still release that along with his books/movies. And in my honest opinion these novels and films are only marketed to them, I see nothing from a marketing standpoint that he's trying to expand his market.

 

Tom sucks. Get used to it.

I thought Tom was totally content being with his family and doing his sci fi crap and I'd be more than happy for him if he would just do that but he can't leave well enough alone. I understand blink was your band, but dude let it go. I don't hate him, I just think he's coming off as really sad and pathetic. I mean I would've been into the WDNTW acoustic thing, but that seems like empty words too. Like there's literally nobody whose words have meant less.

I won't hate him unless he makes good on his "I can come back anytime, I own blink" and turns what is a really great thing for blink into a giant shitstorm all over again. Blink without drama is an awesome thing and I don't miss him.

 

Right after he attempted to sing Watch the World did he post a photo of his water bottle design he wants you to buy for $30?

 

I don't really have any interest in many of his projects, but I don't hate on him for it. I think what bothers me the most is that between his social media posts, his albums, Travis' comments, and seeing him live over the years...it's obvious that he just doesn't really put much into his music anymore. Like...saying he has the "itch" to start playing again soon confirms it: the dude is just not interested in practicing or getting better. Whether that is because of writer's block or other things, I don't know.

Travis made a comment about him one time not even playing his instrument which I think a lot of people took as meaning that Tom needed a backing track live or something. But it made me realize that Tom just doesn't even really play guitar anymore and probably hasn't in a while. It's why he's gotten so much worse live, why he can't keep a band together, and why so much of his music sounds the same.

So basically... I wish he would just stay out of the conversation. He's not even really a musician at this point.

 

But at least Tom is more creative than Mark. That's my hottake yall.

 

Absolutely. Tom is the more creative one and Mark is the more consistent one imo.

 

Yes. But I'd take quality over creativity any time.

 

Atticus Dragging The Lake Vol. 1 came out 15 years ago today. I played the shit out of that disc. Introduced me to a lot of bands, that's actually how I discovered Alkaline Trio lol

 

I say they both have their strengths. Tom is very creative perhaps too much for his own good but you cannot knock Marks creativity too. lol hey both have their pluses and minuses as it were

 

I discovered them when Armageddon was featured on the soundtrack to a Tony Hawk game lol

 

I agree that Tom has the creativity and ability to take risks. I appreciate that more than anything, mainly because, well, you never know what will happen and risk as been both good and bad for him. Tom's writing was progressive, but then it regressed in the later half of his musical career, which is a shame because he was and still is influential to many. Does he get in over his head? Hell yes and he makes it worse with these dumb attention-seeking comments/posts. At times he needs to take a step back back and let someone else offer to take the reins for a little. That's when he's at his best....when he allows his ideas to become stronger through a collective approach. Mark and Jerry Finn were able to do that before the first break-up and Jerry's unfortunate death. Since then, Tom became a narcissistic, cocky, jackass, "businessman". Good for him for doing what he wants. Many people don't get that opportunity. But damn, I do not agree with the way he promotes his stuff. Its heartbreaking to see and its been a disappointment about 90% of the time after I-Empire came out. (I liked Dream Walker, Chasing Shadows, and The Lonely Astronaut children's book.)

I don't wish anything bad on the guy and I'll support his love for "art" because art/music means so much to me. If it wasn't for Dude Ranch, I probably wouldn't play an instrument. I hope he bounces back and starts delivering on what he says he's going to do and for God's sake, stop name dropping and building unnecessary hype about stuff that will probably never happen or come close to the hype-level. And of all things holy....Stop trying to sell me shirts and mugs with a printed selfie and the word "Love" written across the palm of your hand. Show us proof aliens exist and put out music already.
