I think Mark said his favorite bass track is Mutt. I really need to listen it closer to hear the bass more in it.

  3. Listening now. I like it but it doesn’t have to low end EQ that I love in those other songs. This actually sounds more dude ranch-esque in terms of tone. The prechorus tone is kinda good but still he’s so far up the scale that it doesn’t have that Hoppus tone I love.

Yeah, I'm surprised more people don't talk about how lame the guitar work is on that album. It's pretty much all the basic octave and palm muted structures we've heard a million times before. They used a variation of the Adam's Song riff like 10 times, it's ridiculous.

Yeah I mean I love/hate these ranking of songs because a lot can simply depend on my mood at the time. The way I kind of do the rankings is if I had to make a mix tape/CD and could only put X number of songs on it which ones would I choose.

That would make sense it sounds like Dude Ranch as they originally recorded it sometime in 1997 when Scott was still in the band. They recorded it at the same time they recorded I Won't Be Home For Christmas with Mark Trombino. The original Mutt recording is on the album "The Show: Soundtrack from Taylor Steele's Movie" before they took it to Jerry Finn for EOTS. They first started playing the song live in early 1998.

You're a newbie so believe me we have haha. It's one of the bigger complaints everyone's had about the album. And you're 100% correct.

And yet it’s still a good album. Not their best but definitely not their worst.

  9. oh for sure. I just mean for jerry finn’s work, it sounds like trombino’s mark tone. I bought a copy of the show’s soundtrack on CD last year just to have a lossless version of that version of mutt.

I cannot believe the lack of “Carousel” in these lists. Please delete this thread ASAP smh.

the ships have all sailed to the sea

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Carousel. I bought Cheshire Cat after only listening to Enema and TOYPAJ, so I was used to Tom’s highly produced vocals. I didn’t even think it was the same person haha.

I don’t get why the guitar playing is so bland on California. Mark has written good riffs. Matt has as well. It’s not like Tom is the only one capable of writing a good riff.

  15. I feel it was less the playing and more the sounds they went with. What’s the word I’m looking for @bradsonemanband? Tones? Textures?

Both of those are true. I don’t like the tone but also the playing itself where it was only power chords/octaves and the only time they had something else it was that one riff they used a variation of 7 times across the standard + deluxe

the feel and articulation you mean?

  18. the tone was awful on California. sounds entirely digital. there's no warmth to it, too much compression. but it's true, there weren't a lot of good riffs on California either. i think that might be at least partially because there's constantly vocals going on on each song, so maybe they thought that it'd sound less busy if it was less riffs and more vocals over simple power chord progressions. who knows... but the only song that has any space to let a riff happen is "Kings of the Weekend."

  21. Oh yes now i remember what I was thinking about when the record came out - all the riffs that tom would have played were "woahs" on CA and I'm not even being overly negative here. Imagine a guitar riff in the place of and hitting all the same notes as all the "woahs" and it all of a sudden feels right.

I was going to until I saw you do it! I listen to them both as one song always, so why not? It was hard enough cutting it down to 15 as it was.
