Off topic, but I really dig the Goldfinger cover of 12 Days of Christmas

    (:

I mean look at songs like Los Angeles and Bottom Of The Ocean. So it's not impossible they go that same route as those bands.

I don't mind the production as a whole - the songs sound big and full of energy which is a great contrast compared to the lifelessness of Neighborhoods. This record didn't really need as much dynamic range just because of the throwback style they chose.

On the other hand, the guitars sound awful (which I also noticed on the 311 songs he was involved in for their record). They are compressed to the max and are pretty much all "crunch". Once you start to fixate on it, it becomes really annoying.

A good comparison for a similar style that was produced/mixed much more tastefully is Makes Me Sick by New Found Glory. If the blink songs sounded like that, I would love it.

I think we are getting the exact same sound/lyrical content of the 27 songs released a few years ago.

I don’t really care for another “I don’t wanna grow up” suburbian lyrical effort, again. I get it. It’s what they are. What they mastered. But I mean, when one of the song writers just released a really solid album without any lyrical content like above, I get my hopes up.

  5. As an enjoyer, and defender, of both albums ... I didn't think that Alkaline Trio album was all that better lyrically. The themes and way to go about getting to them are basically a similar process with just as much of a "yeah, that's Alk3 being Alk3" feeling.

And it does contain quiet lyrical missteps IMO. I still laugh reading these:
Does anybody know where I can go get high?
Does anybody know where I can go get high?
See I’ve been working like a dog all night
No I can’t sleep but I’m feeling alright
And I’ve got nothing to do so I’d love to go get high

Can anybody here buy this old fool a drink?
Can anybody here buy this old fool a drink?
See my old lady poured it all down the sink
And then she left me and took everything
Now I’ve got nowhere to go and I sure could use a drink

IMO, both bands do what they do and know who they are ... and are masters at that sound, specifically. If all of a sudden Blink-182 songs had lyrics like:

I got some poison on the brain
And I'm not scared I'm not ashamed
No more of anything, anything, anything but the rain
It melts my smile straight down the drain
I found black magic and white shame
And I lost everything, everything, everything but the pain

It'd feel very weird to me.

Damn. That is actually hilarious. It sounds like a parody.

  7. Oddly enough that second set of lyrics (Demon and Division) could *almost* past for blink lyrics on untitled

  8. It would need some Tom warbles ... maybe an animal motif.

When I wrote my comment I was anxiously awaiting the "Little Help?" response, lol. Not sure how much Matt wrote the lyrics for that song! Joking aside however, my question is: if you bring in a new songwriter & vocalist, would we expect them to change the way they write lyrics to fit the pre-assumed writing that fit the new band? Because yes Alkaline Trio and blink know who they are and are masters of that, but we took one songwriter with an established style and brought him into a new band with a different style. Maybe that is why some expected something: different?

In terms of my critique, I do not have much interest in which album has better lyrics. My gripe about California and the deluxe is the over-used/over-done theme of "never growing up" and "growing up in a suburban town." I've heard it. I've loved it...but I sort of feel tired by it now. That is honestly my only critique for California.

I'm fine with the style, production, and sound they went with. I was a big fan of California. It is when we got an additional 11/12 songs of the same style/lyrical content is when I started to feel tired by it. That is why if I hear another album of that, I may lose interest and not feel as connected.

  12. I think Matt's style is all over California. It's just within the mold of a Blink song versus an Alk3 song.

  13. Example:
Someday you'll come back to me
    And I'll say something bitterly
And you'll go racing toward the kitchen
Grab a knife erase my vision
    Take my flatscreen television
And my paintings by Marilyn Manson

I mean his verses in Sober and Only Thing That Matters are about as specifically personal as he's written. His parts in Hey I'm Sorry are super him. I think there's definitely things that are Feldmann influenced but by no means is it a majority. It's Matt trying to write blink songs and there is no frame of reference for what that would come out like.

Just pop "setlists" at the end and we'll be back to the beginning of the blink fan circle of life haha

I think everybody in here would pass an actual exam on where any individual poster stands on each issue at this point

These would be really good song titles on the new album.

That is fair the Only Thing that Matters example is great...also friggen love that verse.

I still stand by my main critique of the 27 songs and there is too much of the "I don't want to grow up" theme and concept which tires me out. I will not say it is bad because that theme and concept connected with us deeply at one point in our growing up. But after a while it wore me out. If we just had California (no deluxe) I would feel more content. The oversaturation in such a short period hurts it for me. It doesn't help the deluxe isn't too great, either.

I mean nobody's saying you're wrong, I love the album and I only keep 15 songs out of the 2 discs in my regular rotation. It's not perfect, and I would prefer not to get a Parking Lot type bridge on the next album lol. Whatever direction they go musically, they still left themselves a lot of room to improve.
