I’m not sure what it means but feel like it’s the kind of thing one would regret typing in a google search.

The second part, sure. The first part is egregious.

So he just wants people to let everything slide?

how so? I don't believe in a fairer more equitable world for folks who want to associate and profit off of collaborations with abusers.

the whole "lets move past cancel culture" just reeks of people wanting to get back to doing questionable shit and not get called out for it.

Travis was a super tough guy when that dude from Echosmith was being a complete creep to his daughter. But it's very typical that he has no problem with someone else's daughter being put through Hell by someone because the attacker was "talented." It's a complete lack of empathy because it doesn't effect him directly and likewise with Matt and Mark.

imagine not understanding that the first part of that Mark quote completely contradicts the second part lol

Like sorry Mark, but what you and all the other anti-"cancel culture" people don't understand is that what you call "cancel culture" is in fact just people trying to "push the world to a better, fairer, more equitable place".

I think the term "Cancel Culture" fundamentally means something different to everyone, which is why I hate that term.

You can't just "cancel" people; Even if you ignore them, they're still going to exist, which is why most of the people we have collectively tried to cancel (Louis CK, Jake Paul, Ronnie Radke) have continued to have success. So by that token, saying "Cancel Culture" is problematic is somewhat disingenuous, because it's ultimately unsuccessful from an activism perspective and the word "cancelled" is just weightless term thrown around online.

But on the other hand, if you asked me "should social media move past public shaming and try to educate themselves before jumping into arguments?" I'd answer "Absolutely". We should try to evolve to a place where we can have a system of accountability that extends past "cancelling" because social media has become a really toxic, post-empathy cesspool.

For example, If you look into specific twitter fandoms, there is a lot of drama, "exposed" threads, smearing, etc. directed between fans within the community. I'm not saying all of that is unwarrented (If you're cutting in line at shows, and talking shit to band members you claim to support, you deserve to be held accountable) but it seems like we forget people online AREN'T public figures, and are in fact real people. So if you consider that "cancel culture" then it makes sense to abolish that.

So when people talk shit about "cancel culture" in respect to the latter scenario, it makes sense, especially considering that "cancelling" is not generally productive in taking down powerful people, but rather divides smaller communities. But if you're arguing it "ruins careers" and is an "overreaction" then that's clearly bullshit, but we never really know what people are talking about when they use that term.

For those saying "what are we supposed to do?"

This is predictable in this thread. We express that we don't approve of the collab, we wont listen to THAT SPECIFIC SONG, but then we move on quite quickly. If you want to express your disdain for that type of behavior then stop listening to blink-182. "The behavior you allow is the behavior that will continue."

It sucks that someone making a dumb comment 10 years ago and someone being an abusive piece of shit both got lumped together into “cancel culture”, so the average person thinks cancel culture is annoying and doesn’t allow people to grow and learn from their mistakes. It’s all about accountability really and your punishment should depend on what you did, but people see someone “cancelled” online for something relatively harmless all the time so they dismiss “cancelling” as a whole.

    sorry for the messy thoughts

Really, pretty much the only people I have ever heard use the phrase "cancel culture" in a derogatory way are people who have done cancel-worthy things or fans of those people. It's just a successor term to "SJW", which is still used but nowhere near as much. People who use "cancel culture" or "SJW" as an insult or in a negative way are basically telling you everything you need to know right up front.

"Cancel culture" is such a dumb phrase that has been coopted by some horrible people, so no. I don't agree.

    EDIT:
Oops, I see that a ton of people have already jumped on that. Sorry for being late.

Y'know how to get rid of "cancel culture"? Stop saying or doing things that make you a piece of shit and consider others before acting. If people say or act in a way that demeans others, then they absolutely need calling out on it. People can learn from being called out on it, but they need to know that it's not okay to act in that way or to use their influence as a way of bringing others down.

Mark, Travis and Matt seem like good people to me, and even good people can make a bad decisions from time to time.

Aziz Ansari's entire persona is built around him being a funny, nice guy. People think that TWY are the most down to earth, nice band in the scene. They are still abusers/complicit in allowing abusers to stay in power. Stop excusing people that you don't know for the dumb shit that they do.

So true. Neither them or anyone else on this board are machines - people are making mistakes and bad decisions. I am not actually defending anyone here. But human beings are not perfect and never will be. But we can learn from our mistakes and educate our society.
