Untitled is an all-time blink song. Enthused and Dick Lips are super dope. I love I'm Sorry. Four of blink's best songs are Tom Dude Ranch songs. Plus most of the Mark Dude Ranch songs, Apple Shampoo/Waggy/Dammit/Emo/Josie/Lemmings,it's an awesome record.

The issue I've found with post-breakup lyricism from Mark and Tom (and I suppose Matt on Cali/Deluxe) is it's all so vague. Tom's lyrics are vague faux-inspirational attempts to be serious, Mark and Matt's are vague party/summer/being young/anti-establishment pop punk stuff. None of it has any personality or character. The pre-breakup stuff, good and bad, has such specifics and details and told such earnest and personal stories that, even when the lyrics suck, they're more memorable and interesting than anything they've done since getting back together. Even on on the untitled record when they're attempting to be serious there are really unique phrasings or there's vivid, memorable imagery where it feels like they're still earnestly speaking to something, rather than the vapid emptiness of most of the "fun" California lyrics or anything AVA has ever done.

There are some exceptions. I like Cynical and Bored to Death and Home is Such a Lonely Place. But they're exceptions, whereas almost all of the pre-break up stuff they wrote felt like a specific identity.

 

Yeah I think the middle paragraph here is what I was trying to drive at, the vagueness of a lot of the newer lyrics pale in comparison to a lot of the earlier stuff, even if that earlier stuff was immature. Voyeur, while being a pretty fucked up song when you consider what he's actually singing about, has such vivid imagery. I still listen to it every time I run through the album, it's a silly song.

 

Curious why you think Dick Lips is un-listenable?

 

Untitled would probably be my all-time favorite Blink-182 song if I was forced to choose one.

 

Untitled is possibly the worst Blink song of the pre reunion era in my opinion. I'd rather listen to Nappa and a Saibaman duet 'Don't Stop Believing' for six hours.

 

Actually, yeah I went back and listened to the Tom only songs on Dude Ranch this afternoon and I'm wrong about Dick Lips. While it's not my favorite Tom song it's fine. I mixed up part of Voyeur with Dick Lips which is why I originally included it on my list. But I will still stand my ground on Voyeur, Boring and Degenerate, they haven't aged well to me and it's hard for me to listen to them now.

If I were to rank the Tom Dude Ranch songs they would go:

Untitled
Enthused
Dick Lips
I'm Sorry
Voyeur
Degenerate
Boring

I still would take any Mark only song except for A New Hope over any Tom only song. I would probably slot A New Hope after I'm Sorry.

I don't get how Untitled can be their worst song if Degenerate and Boring are on the same album.

Plus- TV is probably their worst non-joke song
