what’s the origin of the twitter drama going on right now

apparently someone who is currently writing an Elaine May biography went through and fact checked inaccurate things they said in today’s episode about her career. Apparently also she is disagreeing with covering Elaine May on a podcast called “Blank Check” because May never got a blank check.

I will say, some of the things she fact-checked them on are not at all what they said in the episode.

 

Some of her fact checks are important, like the context behind how she came to direct and star in the film. But when you mix up that actual critiques with “actually she was the 3rd female director in the guild not the 4th” and personal attacks like “congrats on citing a Wikipedia page” your whole deal comes off as insincere and petty.

 

Yeah she’s attacking David pretty hard, basically saying he’s a shitty film critic

 

getting the length of time she was with her partner wrong seems like the definition of inconsequential?

i realize this wasn't the most important critique, just seems like there was some stuff that isn't worth splitting hairs over

 

It’s like she was expecting an episode of You Must Remember This or something

Bizarre that deciding to cover Elaine May is the thing that gets them accused of misogyny

 

Imagine fact checking a comedy podcast like it’s a presidential debate or something

 

The people in the replies that were like “don’t try and act like you’re a comedy podcast David is a respected film critic” I felt like I was losing my mind. I 1000% think of this as a comedy podcast first and foremost.

 

Idk David being his usual sweetie self and her basically coming back with “go fuck yourself” (not in so many words) really put a bad taste in my mouth.

 

I just don’t know how they react to this. Find time to re-record the next three episodes? It’s going to be a whole month of this at least, it’s clearly not going to end today.

 

Lol there’s no way they do that, David has like a two month old. At most maybe they’ll put something at the beginning of the next episode.

This shouldn’t be a scandal. They’re covering a female director and got a few details wrong. Maybe a little nudge suggesting it might be time to send “pasta dinner” to the rafters would be warranted, but this being a full-blown controversy is absurd. And it is 100% primarily a comedy podcast.

 

Also I’ll be honest, until today, I totally thought that the pasta dinner thing was legitimately him saying “I’d like to take this person out for a dinner of pasta.”

 

Yeah this is not a scandal. There’s like, what, max seven replies to ANY of the tweets?

 

Yeah the pasta dinner thing, while I do think it’s funny just because of how pathetic it sounds and its origins as Griffin saying he wanted to take Daisy Ridley out for pasta at a not-too-expensive place where he could pick up the check with his Vinyl money, is probably ready to be retired.

 

imagine thinking a podcast hosted by a guy who popped an aneurysm screaming for ten minutes about costco isn’t a comedy pod

 

i mean, the way they replied to the tweets indicates it was a bigger deal to them than that

 

Yeah they’re clearly taking this to heart even if it isn’t getting traction outside of a small group of people on Twitter + the BC fanbase
