Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever (July 30, 2021) Album • Page 14

  1. You weren't wrong to call it downtempo, but My Future into Oxytocin into GOLDWING is like three pretty different vibes that still feel cohesive imo. Lots of balancing the acoustic/organic instrumentation with more electronic tracks scattered throughout

Ocean eyes was pretty pleasant. I enjoyed that one a bit.

ilomilo I think is part of what I don’t understand. It’s unique and interesting on first listen. Not unpleasant. But as a song I’m not sure I really enjoy it.

When the party’s over feels very sparse. a light piano plays here and there and she softly gives some lyrics that come in and out.

Bury a friend sounded a bit like house music. Cool background at a party. Not sure I’m picking up on the singing again. Though I enjoyed the beats similar to enjoying the beats on bad guy.

Xanny, Not a huge fan of the vibrating bass effect on her voice.

my future I enjoyed. Seemed like something you’d find on the Lofi station for studying.

I guess it just comes down to me being a bit more of a traditionalist when it comes to singing and song structure and she seems to experiment quite a bit with vocals. Glad y’all are enjoying it though.

I suppose so, I guess I just felt like the 16 song album has like... 12 songs that all feel really similar to me. Hopefully it grows on me

  4. I hope so too! Only tracks that didn't catch me on first listen (so far) are Getting Older and Everyone Dies

Listened to this again today. I just flat out don't like Lost Cause.

I really like NDA. The verses of Male Fantasy sound a lot like Serotonin by Girl In Red

  6. Title track is fucking awesome, y'all weren't kidding. Kinda feel like it should have been the closer, but yeah. Really great songwriting on this one with some interesting production throughout. Maybe could have cut a track or two, but I'm willing to bet the whole thing will continue to grow on me. Really hoping this doesn't get overlooked for not being When We All Fall Asleep Part 2.

    Some first listen thoughts:

Gonna take a bit to get into the whole thing. But I’m sure I will. It a slow burn, but it’s more mature, and the lack of immediacy is actually something I can appreciate from an artist as huge as Billie. This is clearly a passion project that feels totally authentic, not a grab for more radio time.

The last two songs have Phoebe vibes. Really hard to believe the end of the title track wasn’t made with “I Know the End” a little bit in mind. “Male Fantasy” is my favorite instantly. If Billie made a folk record, I would not argue.

I guess if I had one real complaint, it’s that the minimalism does take away from the arrangements at times. I wish some tracks were a bit more filled out. Maybe I’ll change my mind on further listens.

holy shit the title track, I remember the clip of the beginning part playing over and over for like multiple minutes back when the album was first announced so having that etched into my head and then the switch up is wild lol

Was listening to the non-singles this morning and was thinking about what I might cut to make this flow a bit better but I think I really like just about everything she does here, just gonna take a couple listens to really sink in. The only one I’m not into is Lost Cause, feels too similar to Therefore I Am.

The way those synths rattle your brain at the end of “I Didn’t Change My Number” is wonderful engineering. Feels like a scene in Mr. Robot when they break the fourth wall by staring into the camera and the whole world shakes.

Also can we please celebrate the greatness of the opening lyric “I didn’t change my number, I only changed who I reply to”?

Woah, the second half of the title track. Wasn't expecting that!

Overall I think this is a decent album but it kinda drags. Way too many slow quiet songs. It would work so much better if NDA, Therefore I Am and the title track were spread out instead of together at the end.

First listen favorites are title track, I didn't change my number, oxytocin and male fantasy.

  22. Absolutely loved this on first listen. Funny enough, the only song that slowed the pace for me was NDA, just because I really want that song to feel more "you should see me in a crown" and it just never quite gets that big. Missed opportunity.

  23. The "NDA" into "Therefore I Am" transition is *chef's kiss*
