I am also Jewish. I made the bullying comment. First of all - I don't actually think anything that went on was bullying in any sense. It's a reference, a meme.

But more to the point, please seriously consider who in the Jewish community and outside of it is actually being bullied with regard to BDS and Palestinian solidarity, how Jewish institutions in virtually all countries are dominated by right wing zionists, and what we understand from intersectionality about the social impact of individual actions when backed by institutional power vs when those actions don't enjoy that backing.

I really wanted to leave it there because this seemed like a good faith post at first glance but then I re-read it and I am really extremely upset at the implication that I or anyone else in this thread or elsewhere on this site has antisemitically conflated Israel with Jews. I have been posting about Palestine and BDS on 2 versions of this site for nearly 10 years at this point. I have specifically made the point about conflating Israel and Jews on this site dozens of times. I would be calling out these things if they were happening. They are not happening. Asking musicians who CLAIM to understand BDS to abide by it is not antisemitic. No one told them to say "we understand BDS!"

I was at pains to be clear - and most agreed - that simply playing in Israel was not the aspect of this situation that made me feel so passionate in this particular case. I do have sympathy for the desire to play in your hometown. I don't have sympathy for a cynical affect of spiritual connection and understanding from a band that would violate principled solidarity so their rich boy bassist can play in his apartheid hometown. Great, they said they understand they didn't actually understand the cultural boycott, but how am I supposed to believe that when Adrianne allegedly blurted out apropos of nothing "we don't support BDS" to an Arab journalist in 2017? I'm supposed to believe this isn't something they've thought about, that's been on their minds for years? That they just now had a revelation about after everyone got mad at them? I reject that it's unreasonable and emphatically reject that its antisemitic to not trust this turn from them.

 

oh wow i guess i never thought about it like that. im going to take the time and think long and hard about this now. i appreciate your clearly well thought out and thought provoking perspective. it never once occurred to me that you have all the right answers and only your opinion is the correct one. your disregard for what i think was a rational statement from my own personal experience not only makes me reevaluate my entire religious upbringing but my identity. i guess i deserved to be bullied because wow lol i suck!

 

hi! thank you for actually taking the time to clarify and share your thoughts so i understand them better. i had no idea about the 2017 interview nor about the privileged background of the bass player. i think i was putting too much weight on my own experience and made poor assumptions about their history. i truly appreciate your clarification on conflating israel and jews and i see where youre coming from. im autistic and take things at a very literal face value which i see now does not bode well in a thread like this. i know you are acting in good faith now and your clarifications and additional background on the big thief situation. i apologize for the poor assumptions again.
