Don’t worry, PR guy retweeted a pro-Palestinian tweet! Everything is fine!

Wonder if the publications that are posting their mid-year lists three weeks early have buyer's remorse about ranking this album so high, given everything that's unraveling in the Big Thief camp this week.

I mean, it's still the best album of the year by a fairly wide margin. They're just dumb assholes now and I'm not going to be vocal about my love for the album.

Yeah I’ll probably still rank this as my album of the year, but I’m not going to be as vocal about it as I would have been before this. I think it’s possible to be critical of them for this and still realize this is the best album of the year.

They had so much good will and tossed it so quickly. They should still cancel those shows.

  8. nah, fuck it and fuck them. I've dropped bands I like for less heinous shit than this. play Israel or don't - again, bands will go where they're wanted, just don't try to justify it with wishy-washy bullshit like Big Thief have tried to do.

The same publications that may have ignored this news entirely because they want to keep goodwill with the band and their PR?

Ha, probably. I haven't really paid attention to who was reporting on it or not. I mostly think it's funny that these publications that constantly jump the gun one month early on mid-year or end-of-the-year lists are now dealing with the not-so-great optics of heaping praise on the band during the same week that they're embroiled in the biggest controversy of their careers.

To me this reads as if they plan on booking them again once the heat is off, whatever which way that may happen.

  17. Finally putting their differences aside for an indie-folk record called I Believe in Warm Dragon Energy or something like that

I’m glad they canceled the shows but this was a very embarrassing debacle

They never should have booked those shows in the first place and their initial statement was pretty terrible but they're ultimately doing the right thing

  21. I am very glad they're cancelling but it's just so frustrating that this is how it happened. It is very hard to take any of their "healing energy of music" crap seriously anymore. All of that reads with such a different undertone for me now. Shame

It’s one of those glass shattering moments when you can’t look at them in the same way, like the magician revealed the trick. Still good that they canceled the shows.

It's particularly frustrating imo because they're saying a lot of the right things but obviously only because they got their asses handed to them. I want to believe they genuinely learned and grew from this but it's so hard to say given this whole situation was a repeat of the same shit from two years prior.

theres a lot to unpack here in this thread. let me preface by saying i am a proud self deprecating jew and find the actions of the israeli government an absolute atrocity and does not reflect the values taught in the jewish faith. big thiefs remark about the “moral high ground” is undoubtedly tone deaf. being raised jewish, going to hebrew school, summer camp at the jcc, all of it, its shoved down your throat that israel is the one true safe haven for the jews and have a very very very one sided teaching about israel and palestine. i mean they literally give you an all expenses paid trip to israel. because of this i can see exactly why they would want to play in tel aviv and why the member whose hometown it is feels a sort of spiritual connection to it.

now people saying that youve lost all respect for them and applauding them getting bullied into pulling out of the show… what is wrong with you? that bullying comment really triggered me because my whole life ive had to go out of my way to avoid any sort of jewish stereotypes, hide my culture and my identity because of constant bullying and harassment growing up not just to me but my family as well. so just please recognize that antisemitism is still alive and well and bragging about bullying jews into not playing israel in itself is extremely tone deaf and antisemetic. if you live in a red state we dont blame you for the homophobic and transphobic and racist actions of your governors and so you shouldnt lump in jews with the actions of the israeli government. so what did big thief do? they listened, they learned, they did everything right that you would expect from anyone decent. why say its too little too late? that makes me think you just have hate in your heart.

i know this was long winded but i just thought i would offer a jewish perspective and ask you to see this situation from a different perspective. im going to crawl back in my hole now and keep my mouth shut.
