It’s what happens with almost every critical darling at some point. Hyperbole on both ends. It’s just odd because in this case it seems like a lot of people are going out of their way to say “I think they’re just OKAY!” as if that’s a hot take or something.

 

would people saying "actually i think big thief fucking sucks" instead of saying they're okay not obviously be way more weird/worse? it seems pretty clear that it would be

 

well they hadn't made a record that properly clicked with me til I heard this one so I went 0-100 on them at some sort of land speed record

 

Yeah no shit, but that’s not really what the tweet that prompted this conversation is saying.

 

People can have whatever opinion about the record that they want. The problematic part imo is implying that they’re cultivating some toxic fanbase

What I meant earlier regarding “theyre okay” or “theyre fine” is just that…it’s so much weirder to be apathetic or lukewarm about a band and then jump to the conclusion that people who love them are somehow faking it. Saying that they fucking suck and then having that opinion at least tracks

 

Yeah it’s cool to think they’re just mid or whatever. It’s cool to think they suck shit for all I care. Just funny how that there is Discourse about a problem that, as far as I’m aware, doesn’t really exist.

 

well, right, my point was the tweet itself seems to be inventing something that isn’t there lol. and i don’t think anyone is saying the band is okay as a hot take - that’s like the most baseline take that there is lol, the hyperbole would be saying they fucking suck or something

I can’t seem to articulate my thoughts on this matter in a concise and coherent manner, but I find that thread to be absolutely maddening shit and to me it feels like it comes from a place of insecurity and bad faith. total strawman argument, and a deeply cynical way to look at a band whose core songwriter is a queer woman receiving overwhelming praise. if you disagree that the band is special then fine whatever, you don’t have to reach to paint their fans and the critics who’ve praised them as oppressive to make yourself feel better about the fact that you feel like you’re missing what everyone else sees in them. unless I have missed some telling incidents of condescension from critics and big thief fans toward dissenters, this feels like a total projection.

 

I think the initial take is more rooted in "men talking condescendingly about music", and Big Thief is one of the most talked about bands right now in music.

I don't think there's an implication that this is something the band is cultivating, just part of having a growing fan base with a lot of buzz currently.

This is also odd! Why is it weird that a rock band fronted by a queer women is receiving critical acclaim? Again, the point in misogyny and lack of representation in music criticism is valid, but other than that I’m really struggling to understand anything about this argument

my guess is Tatiana a woman who works in music and is a medium big thief fan, who has had one too many douchey music guys talk down to her about it. I don’t think there’s any reason to be pissed at her saying that

If there are male critics “getting very aggressive when anyone says big thief isn’t great” then that’s lame and shitty but has anyone seen any critics doing that? I just don’t get what the hell is going on lol
