I'm still undecided as to whether or not I want to see this opening weekend.

Just noticed the length of this thing. At least 20 minutes too long for what it is ("but we'll see")

Work (on the side) started in 2006. He left the film in what, 2014? So that's 7-8 years of work. Granted, work on the side, but still, he did get multiple scripts done in that time. And McKay and Rudd read all the drafts when writing their script. Seems weird to assume he'd give Hope a good role in the last stretch. And I love Whedon but don't necessarily trust him with women regardless of reputation, lol.

I'll likely have to rewatch it, but I recall thinking it was just an okay movie.

  8. No one said she didn't have a good role though, they just said they added some things to the character after talking with the actress — something I definitely could imagine happening if Wright was doing the movie, especially given Rudd's vocal displeasure with him leaving.

Same with me, but I'm positive that I won't be watching either film again

Hah. I'll most likely watch BvS out of curiosity but only once.

I'd give his Action Comics run a shot. Sometimes Morrison is a bit much for me, but he is one of my favorite Superman writers, even when he gets a little crazy and overwhelming. At the core of all his work involving the character, there are good Superman stories whenever he handles him.

I don't think Superman's "do the right thing at all times" mantra means that he follows the same codes from his founding. They adapt to the climate. He doesn't automatically know what's right, part of the story is him figuring it out. Superman can recognize an unjust law, he's not going to just blindly follow it, and there's rich thematic stuff to dig into if he does come into that sort of conflict. Morals aren't binary and how we work through that is hard. But at the end of it all, Superman should be a character who reflects doing the right thing no matter how hard it is. That doesn't have to align with the law or the American status quo at all.

Large corporations make anti-corporate movies all the time. Thank You for Smoking. The Lego Movie. Fight Club. Josie and the Pussycats. Robocop. Mad Max: Fury Road.

I also don't think this Superman is any more boring than him flying through buildings with Zod. Like I said, you can introduce someone like Metallo to have big action stuff that actually has consequence because Superman is invested in the small stuff.

Captain America fights the establishment in Civil War. I think Spider-Man went up against the police in tASM. Now I'll accept that studio heads are not going to just buy into a Superman vs. the police movie, but good filmmakers make subversive works within the constraints of big studios all the time.

I think you'd have to get a good filmmaker to characterize Superman against that challenge. I don't think it's an automatic no, I think that good writing and characterization would go a long way, as would trusting the audience. A non-white, non-male, non-straight Superman would be incredible, but if part of your contention is you're unsure that corporations would fund a movie where Superman fights corporations, then you're probably stuck with a straight white guy Superman. And again, I think a good filmmaker could make that Superman work.

Superman throughout the years has been a bullied, loner kid. The 1978 Donner movie, Smallville, a ton of comics. He comes from modest beginnings on a farm in Kansas, holding his powers inside and feeling different from everyone else around him. In that Grant Morrison run, Clark is basically Peter Parker in his home life: a broke journalist in a shitty apartment in a bad part of Metropolis. The thing about Superman and Spider-Man is they're both the kind of hero who would stick up for a kid being bullied in the streets and walk home with him. That's absolutely who Superman is. Clark Kent and Peter Parker are genuinely good people in and out of costume, and while it is reasonable and a fair story point to explore if people were to fear him, I think you have to tackle that with Lex Luthor as the absolute extreme of that fear. Again, if Luthor and Superman are contrasted in the eyes of the general public, with Luthor as the rich corporate CEO who's bulldozing low income areas for expansion and supplying the police/military with weapons, and Superman as the guy who's protecting civilians from harm and destroying Lexcorp technology and walking bullied kids home, then I think you can make a Superman work in today's landscape.

I think it is my general dislike for Supes that had me reluctant to buy on Morrison's run. All-Star Superman was easily my fave story for him.

I haven't read a ton of Superman solo stuff, but I've enjoyed him in all the other stuff I've read. Earth One is good.

If you liked All-Star Superman I imagine you'd at least mostly dig that Action Comics run. That, Birthright, Superman for All Seasons, Kingdom Come, and Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow are some of the better known Superman stories that I think are really great. Then again, if you just don't particularly enjoy Superman, I don't know how much you're willing to read haha.

Not finished yet -- the thing is too long and BvS is 20 minutes longer -- but yeah, the striking scenery has been the best of it so far.

Texted a friend to see if she wanted to claim my extra ticket for this. "Eh...I don't know. I'm just gonna wait for Wonder Woman...wait...is this the one where they introduce her? Yes, okay how soon can we go?!"

The good thing about Snyder's Superman is that he isn't beyond saving. There are tiny moments, like Clark with Ma Kent after the attack, that show Cavill can be a great Superman. With the right screenwriter and/or director, a Superman film starring him could be great. Routh, on the other hand, was impossibly bad in the role.

Legit funny moment in a mostly dry movie -- Supes gets smashed into a sign that says "106 days without an accident". The 1 and 6 fall off.

Ah, Spider-Man 3... Well despite the critics, looks like $160M+ are still the estimates, plus a lot of social media buzz. You going to see it this weekend?
