I think after a few more listens, the songs will definitely start to stand out for you. That's how it was for me anyways. Nice write up though and this is how I felt after my first listen.

Listen, I'm a big fan of cheese: american, provolone, pepperjack, gouda, etc. Cannot get down with Turnover

Turnover I think is meant to be a little more light hearted.
The lyrics are more juvenile but the records message seems to focus on young love so that makes sense. Like your first love letter or something.

I love PV, but it has lost some staying power. Prob my bad for over-listening.

  4. Re: Citizen, Mat's solo record that dropped over the summer is better than both Citizen full-lengths.

Still haven't connected with this album outside of a few tracks that I love, but it's w/e because I've never really been head over heels for a Balance album anyway.

  7. Cannot stop listening to the Revelation b-side. Would easily be the catchiest song on the record had it made the cut imo, but I can totally see why it didn't make it. It's definitely a track that I'd say accurately represents the step between TTWTWM and LWM.

What I want to know is why they didn't just send those out with pre-orders? I would have just not pre-ordered if I had on known I could get free stuff haha. It's usually the other way around.

Speaking of pop-punkish bands going in a more indie direction, I should probably revisit those Basement and Somos records from earlier this year.

Somos album is great. The last basement album is probably the best release by any of the bands doing that style but I don't really care for much else they've done. Idk I should probably revisit that album too

foreign tongues and daisyhead are bands in this sub-subgenre that get no love

The new Basement was just alright. Really like two or three songs. Somos is underappreciated

everytime i think about somos i think about how i've never been that bored listening to an album before (temple of plenty). i usually find something to latch onto but it was like water off a duck's back for me.
Saw Balance tonight, as expected Foxing was the best live band bc, come on. But Balance is not nearly as bad a live band as people lead me to believe. Sonically they sound very tight, no sloppy playing or anything, which is all you can really ask for. Plus those shoegaze elements really come out live -- the wall of sound and focus on interesting textures and tones, it was pretty cool. New songs sounded great even without the electronic/new stuff, really dug postcard with live drums. I left like seven songs into their set though, the crowd was very rowdy and i wasn't feeling that tonight. it was like when a pop punk band plays, pretty much. Which I think kind of illustrates how one might think BalCo is a bad live band: they seem to "vibe" more than anything when they play, which means they aren't super energetic but they are definitely into it. But that approach is at odds with the crazy energy of the crowd, so I can see how one thinks they're boring. They're just enjoying it differently, and I think the new songs definitely lent themselves well to that approach.
also this is still their best set of songs, but the separation songs still bang in a live which was a nice surprise

foreign tongues are criminally underrated. if they haven't already, they need to cut ties with No Sleep.
