Balance and Composure - Light We Made (Oct 7 2016) Album • Page 51

  1. I mean at this point you're basically restating what I'm saying so yeah. I just got over this band fast after Separation (which I still love, including earlier releases than Separation). All the bands in this sub-genre (Citizen, Basement, Title Fight) have disappointed me with their recent stuff. Only Turnover bucked that trend with their latest record. And I used to love all of those bands when they first appeared on the scene. It's clear that this sound is just not my thing anymore, for whatever reason. I kind of think it takes itself too seriously/thinks it is better than it is, but that's just my weird perspective.

I just thought it was more fun to voice my opinion in here rather than let it be an echo chamber of "the new album is amazing!" Debate is always more interesting than everyone agreeing. Not that everyone was agreeing, but not many were outright disappointed with the record.

The only thing I would add to your characterization of my argument is that I didn't want them to become a specific something else - I just wanted them to branch out in their songwriting in general. Which they did to an extent here but mainly just retrofitted their old structures in a new style. Which is fine. Idk. No one is right or wrong here, it's all just relative.

  2. I guess I just don't think they were trying to enter that scene (Citizen, Basement, Turnover) as much as leave it. To me, this doesn't sound much like any of those bands -- this feels much more like a natural and successful evolution of their sound --and, quite frankly, it's much better than any of those bands' last albums

"fame" was my clear favorite after a few listens, but now i think "midnight zone" may have taken its place. the chorus is just ridiculously good.

Easily one of my favorites. The hook is infectious, and everything even down to the drumbeat that repeats throughout the song is an earworm to me.

  11. I meant that they all started from a similar place, not where they've ended up. I would totally agree with the fact that they ended up in quite different places. I would argue that Turnover's last record is much more successful at what it's trying to be then all of these bands' recent releases, including BalCo, but obviously I'm the black sheep here.

citizen is dreadfully boring. even when they tried to get more musically interesting they forgot how to write a hook

the thing this record has over turnover is more variety (it's not the same song over and over and over) and not horrendous lyrics

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

Yeah, Citizen is extremely boring to me.

This album is still awesome. Been listening to it a lot the past couple of days. Midnight Zone is so good

  15. Okay, but Turnover did that sound justice on each track, whereas I don't think BalCo did variety well. Also, I think you're vastly overstating how varied the sound actually is on Light We Made. Anyways, as far as lyrics, the Turnover songs are simple songs about love and heartbreak, but they didn't write terrible lyrics. They're actually quite pretty and evocative. Case in point:

"Now collapse, take delight in the fall and catch your breath
I know you feel the ring from it all
So try and collect yourself now
    It's just a euphoric comedown"

a lot of them are just cheesy as hell. Sure there's some decent lines but as a whole it's cheese central

Bad lyrics, generic music that makes the album sound like one long song and the faux deep approach they seem to take themselves/their fans hold them in that same light. I don't get it at all they're so boring.

Yeah thought the Turnover album was pretty boring when I listened to it. The songs all really blended together too much

I just find it funny when formally pop-punkish bands discover indie rock elements they act like they've reinvented the musical wheel and there's all this talk about how much they've "matured"

Still love that Turnover album, and I wasn't a fan of them before. Absolutely nothing boring about it to me but to each their own.
