You said “if you just said you don't like the accent…no one would have an issue with that.”

That is what they said, just with an explanation of *why* they don’t like it (because it sounds to them like pandering even when it may not be), and even made clear that they recognize it’s their own internal bias that they struggle to get over, not some attempt as “legitimate” criticism or whatever

 

The part where they said "yeah, that's whyit's my bad opinion in the bad opinion thread." read as being dismissive of the complaint.

So that's why I ventured to explain in further detail what the complaint was.

And I disagree that "I think that accent sounds like pandering" and "I don't like the accent" are the same thing because the former still implies something about the person with the accent.

Listen, I'm not here to chew you out and I hope you didn't take my posts that way, but I also believe that it's important to understand each other and be cognizant of what we say and how people take it.

And if it's wrong to try to help people improve themselves by pointing out when we think they're making a mistake, then we're in a lot of trouble and this world is never getting better.

 

I mean everything I am about to say in the nicest way possible, for real. There's not a whole lot of nuance to a text post on a message board, it's how it goes.

I came into the "bad opinions" thread and posted what I would consider to be one of my bad musical opinions. It's bad. I am very aware that that not enjoying an entire genre because I don't like the way they pronounce some words is silly. However, I haven't found an artist yet that I was interested in/cared enough about/was exposed to enough/whatever to help me move past that bias.

Even in my original post, I said I'm happy for everyone who does and I do sincerely mean that. I was not trying to invalidate anyone else's opinion and certainly not anyone's art. It's a me thing. It's my bad opinion. I was under the impression that is what the thread was for.

Could I have worded it better, like not mentioned a specific artist? Yep. That is clear now and I am being very real when I say I didn't mean to offend anyone. It was meant to be a harmless throwaway post in what I (maybe mistakenly) assumed was just kind of a fun thread to say something dumb in.

Believe it or not, I get it. I've made comments intended to be throwaway that turned into something else unintentionally.

The important thing is that we all walk away with a better understanding of each other and without speaking for anyone else, I hope that we've achieved that.

I really do hope you don't take any of this badly or let it deter you from making more posts. That's not the point of any of this.

I try to be as open-minded as I can and crave musical variety, but I don't know if I'll ever get to the point of throwing on a jug band album outside of The Lovin' Spoonful's penchant for digressions into the genre.

 

Don't worry...I once came here and said that liberal minded white music fans enjoy bloc party partially out of white guilt, whether they realize it or not. It got to a point where someone made a super offensive meme out of Malcolm x.
