yeah they're just doing a disservice to themselves by not marketing properly. very simple move.

And doing it at the beginning is not sufficient because people may not be paying attention then, but when they hear the song they perk up and focus, and now they're invested in knowing the name

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. Their self-deprecating stage banter was pretty good

I think he completely walked back his faith or something a while back. I vaguely remember reading about it. Could be wrong

mellow harsher probably has the best stage banter of any band i've seen live.

Phonte had good stage banter when I saw him, he was funny.

Lol I was in peak fangirl mode during the release of the black parade and subsequent tour and I obsessively watched all the potato quality YouTube clips throughout the tour and before my show. Then when it got to my show I was bummed that all the banter was reused and scripted. It may not even have been that bad and it's just my poor memory but I remember knowing like everything Gerard would say between songs and was like :tear: we're not special lol

Tyler the Creator is so fucking funny onstage, and it's genuinely in the moment too, he'll get a whole running joke going throughout a show based on something an audience member did or said

covers should only be released as singles and never be put on an actual album. bonus track at the very most. its even worse when its in the middle of the album

While I understand the sentiment, I can't say I agree with this. Some covers work very well in an album's placement, and I'm under no illusion that a cover is replacing what could've been another song.

In fact, I have more of a problem with covers being pushed as singles than as album tracks.

A well-placed, in-character cover can absolutely work in the middle of a record. Spoon did it successfully twice! ("Don't You Evah" and "Me and the Bean")

  11. It can be done right for sure. The Tame Impala cover in the middle of Anti rules, not just the performance itself but the purpose it serves as a transition in the record

I never liked that Rihanna Tame Impala cover. It’s literally karaoke on the original song lol

Natalie Imbruglia's Torn tho. But if it is a jarring cover it doesn't work. Mile Cyrus cover of every rose has its thorn in Can't be Tamed always felt jarring but it's also not a good song imo

Torn almost made me bite my tongue and not do my original post. What a good song. But alas, I have to stand my ground despite the outlier

Yeah I def agree that a good cover that fits the album and isn't distracting is an outlier. If I never know it's a cover like Torn it works. If I'm listening to the album and don't even know the original version but think wtf why does this song seem so different than the others in a not great way??? It def doesn't work.

"Souvenir" was (alas) probably the best song on the new Joyce Manor album!

more mid-to-late album ones that completely work:
    Afghan Whigs "The Temple"
    Electrelane "I'm on Fire"
Title Tracks "Tougher Than the Rest"
Todd Terje - "Johnny and Mary"
TV On the Radio - "Mr Grieves"
Primal Scream - "Step Inside This House"
Super Furry Animals - "Y Teimlad"
Junior Boys - "When No One Cares"
Chromatics "On the Wall" ("Into the Black" also a great opener)
    Hilotrons - "I'm a Parade"
    Califone "The Orchids"
FNM - "Theme From Midnight Cowboy"
Okkervil River's The Stage Names and Black Sheep Boy both include partial covers to help framr the theme/narrative as well.

I had no idea Don’t You Evah was a cover, and looking it up it’s even weirder. Apparently the original song was on an album that was shelved until November 2007, but Spoon released the album with their version in July 2007…

Sounds like a situation not dissimilar to Bowling For Soup and SR-71 with 1985.
