Big fan of Paramore but the whole "get the audience to sing the problematic line we wrote" thing is lame cop-out nonsense and maybe the most annoying possible option, made worse by everyone patting them on the back for their cleverness. (Also not helped by the "oh by the way a bunch of you said a bad word!" gotcha banter addition.) I respected them more when they just didn't play it.

  2. So you respected them more when they were inactive? Just reminding you that between the time they said they were retiring the song for a while and their return, 4 years during which they didn't play any shows have passed. How is this still an issue then?

    I think it’s a huge non-issue tbh

I think it’s a great compromise. I love it when Hayley covers her mouth when she does it too. They retired it, people wanted it back, this is a good way to do it. It gives the agency both towards the fans and to the band while still displaying why the censored lyric could be harmful. Maybe one day, when they play it, the entire crowd could be silent during that line. That would be powerful. Until then though, the band can’t stop what their fans say or think, so this is at least a self-aware way of letting the song continue to exist, as it is beloved beyond that lyric.

Also, the band is going above and beyond with being a safe space, which speaks more volumes than discontinuing a song that people would just rally to bring back anyway. This is the most graceful and self-aware way to do it. Add in some dialogue on how they’ve grown, how the message could be harmful, or how it was like growing up as a female lead in such an abrasive scene to give context to why she wrote the lyric, and I think that’s great

however, I can get where you’re coming from

don't you dare say you dislike the new song or that it seems very strange that they got back with tom right when emo/pop punk nostalgia is at an all time high

they waited until all their fans were primed for a nostalgia circuit run, and they saw how successful the nostalgia fest in vegas was. secure your bag and all, i'm just sayin.

"Tom is great and we're so glad he's back except he sucks at singing and he's weird about aliens and we're glad Skiba kept the band going except I hope they never play the material again except for maybe the songs I like, because real Blink is the first three to four albums that were a huge part of my childhood and maybe Dogs Eating Dogs if I'm feeling frisky, but Neighborhoods sucks because it's full blown Tom and you never go full blown Tom, but Blink still isn't Blink without Tom, even though he still sucks." - some Blink-182 fan

My "bad opinion" is that Blink-182 is a good band, even great at times, but others in that genre do it so much better and I have no idea why such a large percentage of this site holds them up as legends.

I’m not even sure I agree it’s some uniquely good time for emo. Because they put a festival together? They have those in every genre. A lot of the bands on that bill have been touring regularly and filling venues consistently all along.

i mean i agree, but it's something in the zeitgeist right now. a lot of millenials hitting 30 and wanting to relive their teenage years.

I don't like them at all and have always chalked up their way-outsized success as primarily a matter of benefitting from great timing, synthesizing those specific sounds in a marketable package at just the moment enough of the public had soured on the current sound and especially image of radio pop.

And yeah they remain popular because nostalgia is a helluva drug.

I'm saying their success was a function of the influences being synthesized and their image, not a function of quality.

I wouldn't allege they have no talent but I don't think a lot of ppl (incl the membership of blink-182 probably) seriously believe they are actually "better" than the peers they mostly eclipse in streams

We just had this convo in here. Aside from Green Day I can’t think of another band from the era that could write as good of a pop song as the ones on Enema or TOYPAJ. They had a knack for it

Blink 182 is huge cuz theyre charismatic and good at being rock stars and people see themselves in mark and tom. They capture the irreverent mood of the era

I think some older songs going viral on tiktok has helped too. It's def brought in younger fans. Anecdotal but several years ago many of the youth I worked with didn't gaf about these older emo and pop punk bands let alone know who they are, and now they seem to be trendier again

when I was in middle school I loved the stupid banter than the blink guys would do in between songs, like watching clips of live performances or listening to their live album. And even though that specific material is deeply unfunny and corny to me now, I still really wish bands would make more of a thing of interacting with each other + the audience in between songs.

Agreed. I've been to probably 10 concerts in the past year and there hasn't been a ton of banter. I think Girl In Red might have been the best, but she also has a rabid fanbase that demands it.
