You said it yourself here. Blink makes better “smooth brained loud rock”. The data shows it

 

their music is either a) too jokey to the point of not taking it serious or b) too self-serious to the point where it's boring. no in between. they're a very bad band.

 

There is a very clear in between and they thread that needle perfectly on Dude Ranch and EOTS. TOYP is the weakest lyrically but contains some of their biggest hooks, and Untitled leans too far to your point b, but is still at a level that any working pop punk band is trying to hit 20 years later. You’re talking out of your ass.

 

TOYP is a perfect pop record I also would rather see a band entering their prime rather than one that has long left it.

 

What band could even be considered? Green Day’s early stuff is too inconsistent, and by the time they hit American Idiot they were incredibly self serious. My Chem never got close on any level. Jeff Rosenstock is probably pop punk’s best lyricist but even his most consistent album couldn’t match how tight Dude Ranch and Enema are.

if you're limiting it to strictly speaking pop punk, green day is absolutely better, has the best album and best writing, and is undeniably bigger lol. have you heard of the ramones? better. the descendents? better and there'd be no blink without them. good offspring is better than good blink but bad offspring is somehow worse. the only argument you can really make is blink is the last good massive pop punk band. wonder years are better but obviously a fraction of the size.

if you open beyond an extremely narrow definition of pop punk, and since you brought Rosenstock into the convo it seems like we probably should since he isn't really pop punk, there are literally dozens of bands lol

I get it’s not cool to say that blink was a good band at writing pop punk songs but they were. They were very, very good. There’s a reason so many people are hype about them coming back. There’s a reason 0 bands have been able to move the style even an inch away from their most popular shit without returning to the well. There’s a reason that modern popular hip hop fucking steals from them lol.

I missed this. No doubt is Turnstile gonna be the better live band, but the draw for me is the band that I’ve listened to for 30 years, as shitty as they might be.
