Is it me or is pop punk in a particularly abysmal state right now? I feels like its either incredibly overproduced nonsense coming out of the Travis/MGK extended universe or boring bands that sound like 00s pop punk cover bands with bad recording equipment that can’t actually write a catchy 00s pop punk song. That’s not even to mention those weird pop-punk rappers that aren’t MGK.

Willow’s making some genuinely exciting music (minus “Emo Girl”).

yeah i dunno if it's just me getting older and not connecting with the music anymore but pop punk hasn't done much for me since, like, 2018 maybe. all of that mgk/travis barker stuff is just unlistenable and i haven't liked any of the newer bands being popped up as part of the "revival" like pinkshift, meet me at the altar, etc..

I know it sounds like "old man doesn't get it anymore" but I really feel like they lack a certain something, whether it be the unique voices, memorable melodies, creativity, or just musical craft. I find a TON of new music in other genres to love, but just can't find it with pop punk. There just simply is no one making music like they used to, as dumb as that sounds. I could list so many bands and albums that stand the test of time, but barely anything these days does it

yupp, i think you hit the nail on the head. there's a ton of great new music being released in other genres but pop punk, for all the talk of it being revived, just isn't cutting it right now

I’m realizing that I don’t know which bands are emo and which are pop-punk, etc. Those two have always shared a very vague genre to me. I might like some of the bands we’re down on in here. Or the ones I like might be a different sliver of genre? I confess myself way behind the times on the classification

I hate getting into genres, but "emo" and pop-punk overlap most of the time unless you are talking about original emo which was like SDRE and Promise Ring, etc

not really. if anything is the same it’s modern power pop and pop punk. emo still has a good amount of differences.

I think one I thing in particular (next to things you mentioned) the bands I called cover bands are lacking is ridiculous budgets. You can’t make that 00s major label pop punk album they fail at making without it.

I definitely think too many emo adjacent bands are being labelled pop punk bands. At least when I say pop punk I am not referring to that sound at all. The state of that sound is a whole other bag of worms.

So my question then is what are some examples of the bands we're talking about right now?

I've enjoyed Anxious, Oso Oso, Carly Cosgrove, Caracara, Tree River, etc.

I have no idea if that's who @irthesteve and @The Lucky Moose are talking about or not.

Yeah also confused by the question and Moose you have to check out Camp Trash, Palette Knife, Oso Oso, and Origami Angel. If you think any of those are lacking we know the truth
