I have been listening to St Anger a fair amount in pure fascination

Was on a Lou Reed kick and then remembered that’s his final album now so I went back to a few songs.

St Anger is probably the metallica album I listen to most...

    It’s like their Fun House

    hmmm

I mean I don't think it's very good but I'm more likely to listen to St Anger than Death Magnetic.

st anger is just wild to me. I have a hard time wrapping my head around like nearly every creative choice made. I love the stupid snare, I think the vocals are often hilarious especially bc they’re so dry and upfront in the mix, and I love how out of their element they sound trying to throw nü-metal influence in and at pretty much the exact moment ppl started to turn their backs on it. it’s fascinating and hilarious.

  9. I actually listen to tracks 3-7 on Death Magnetic about as much as the rest of their stuff. I started listening to them pretty late and don't listen to them too often, though. I'll listen to "Frantic" and "St. Anger" occasionally, but I think I've only heard the rest of that album maybe once ever haha.

I actually like a bunch of St Anger songs. The cardinal sin is the production. Always has been.

Death Magnetic is pretty awesome, no caveats

I'd argue its biggest fault is its length. Absolutely no reason on earth for any of those songs to be more than three minutes long.

absolutely lol, but again it makes for a more perplexing listen which .... is clearly the draw to it for me lol

I still maintain that St. Anger has riffs. Production and song lengths are absolutely the problem with that album. Plus some dumb lyrics, but Het can be guilty of that in other places too.

It’s a confluence too of a record deliberately made to sound gross and gnarly as an aesthetic choice AND woeful incompetence by Bob Rock.

Add to it a newfound (healthy) therapy-induced willingness to let go of their perfectionism. It really was just a perfect storm for sounding like ass.

I absolutely would not change about it because I think I would like it less. I really need to watch Some Kind of Monster soon

St Anger is one of those albums that is simultaneously both good and bad, but not anywhere in between. I still can’t work it out 20 years after I first heard it.

I've hated the St. Anger snare sound so long that I actually like it now.

There’s a pretty good version by Robin Pecknold that got me into it. Might be worth checking out. I can sorta get behind the opinion that the strings and instrumentation on the PG version might sound a little cheesy.
