Nothing about The Maine is all that innovative or exciting, but they are pretty good at their middle-of-the-road white boy rock. Completely inoffensive.

I was into a few songs from Black & White back in the day. That’s all I can really say about them.

The past 5 or 6 pages has just been (what I assume is) pop punk talk and I have no idea what anyone has said. I’ll just assume it’s all bad considering it’s been talked about in here and continue to avoid all pop punk at all costs.

If the bar for good bands is innovation, there's a very short list of good bands.

Nah, hard disagree there. Innovation is not about being genre-smashing and changing the world, it's about creating your own niche, your own sound, something special and unique. There are plenty of bands in the genre of TWY who have made innovative strides in their genre.

hmmm idk. The new Hum album is the best thing ive heard this year because its 55 minutes of flawless riffs and nothing more really.

I don't know why anyone thinks I said "the only good music is innovative music," because I clearly didn't.

I do not give a shit about “creativity.” Everything sounds like something else. Everyone is pulling from their influences, consciously or not. Some of the best songs I’ve ever heard have 3 songs played on an acoustic guitar.

Genuinely think The Maine have done this over the course of their last few album, but ok Steve.

I’m kind of to the point of feeling like “if (a musical act) isn’t doing something unique, why should I care?”

Like what’s going to get people’s attention if everyone’s just doing some small variation of the same thing? Why would I listen to X when I could just be listening to Y and get the same thing, (or nothing at all) out of both?

But at the end of the day, a good song is always a good song... and I think the timing at which we come across a new artist can be the most important thing too. I just really like an element of eccentricity, I think, and having that reaction of being like “woah, that hit different. I need more.”

But like, how are you defining "something unique"? Is it a musical thing? A production thing? A lyrics thing? Is it throwing away the standard verse-chorus framework and experimenting with more freeform song structures? Is it ditching common key signatures for different musical modes or for atonality?

To me, there are so, so many things that can make music unique and interesting, whether it's someone telling a gripping story, someone taking a familiar lyrical trope and putting a spin on it I haven't heard before, someone mashing up influences I hadn't thought would fit together well, a really unique voice, something that stands out in the production, etc.

Yeah, that's just a disagreement with how we feel then, I don't think they have at all but that's fine

Could be all of those things, and could only be a couple... it could even just be down to the vibe or feeling you get from the music, an emotional quality, nothing more. And sometimes a song just has to be a fun listen...

It’s weird... if it hits, it hits. And that type of thing can take on a near infinite number of forms, I’m sure. It’s hard to put into words, because a song doesn’t have to be super progressive and all over the place to be great... and on the flip-side, a wild progressive metal track, for instance, might fall completely flat to a pop song.

But to address your initial string of questions, yeah I definitely think it all plays into a “full package” of sorts. But that also doesn’t mean it’s automatically going to work for you either. I don’t think any one person necessarily listens to music the same way. It’s like it comes down to that “it” factor that you really can’t describe... Idk man, I really wish I had a better way of putting it...

I will say this though, for me personally, if a song evokes a strong sense of “imagery” whether it’s through lyrics, tone, or overall atmosphere of the track, and it makes me think or feel something or takes me somewhere exciting, that’s hard to come by, and it’s one of the best responses, or reactions you can get out of music.
