Really over the top vocals can get to me. Brendon Urie definitely falls in that category.

 

I actually STRONGLY prefer videos where they fake-play for at least some of it. Pure “plot” ones are much cheesier for me.

 

this instantly made be think of "The Reason" by Hoobastank. and then they did a follow-up storyline video for the next single.

i'm pretty sure sixth grade me was blown away by the video as it might have been the first story / plot music video i had seen. also because the story of robbing diamonds / faking a crime for the distraction element seemed very cool vs the song itself which i disliked heavily and overheard all the time

 

few things grind my gears in music videos as much as pausing the song to do a plot segment and then starting from where it left off.

 

Honestly I would rather have this than when they just leave in the sound from the plot playing over the song though

 

This is Ben Platt for me. Also St. Paul and The Broken Bones, but I like the music more there so they get a pass

 

Overly histrionic vocal delivery tends to be a turnoff for me. It's the reason I cannot get into Spanish Love Songs at all. Also a problem I have with a lot of Wonder Years stuff.

 

As far as singing in accents... man I don’t care lol. Yeah if a person is going out of their way to sing in an accent that’s not theirs, I might side eye the person if I know better. But if the voice sounds good then it sounds good, and if it makes an artist feel better about the incredibly vulnerable act of letting the world hear them sing, then whatever. edit: obviously barring racist accents

That said it took me a very long time to get into any British hip hop

 

Ben Platt has one of the best falsettos that has ever been gifted to a human.

 

Oh yeah, to be clear, I acknowledge that he has an incredible voice. I just can’t listen to more than like... one of his songs in a row haha

 

One other vocal thing I hate is a fake voice crack usually done by a pop singer when covering a rock song to try and add some "edge" haha. If you can sing well just sing! Don't pretend it's a struggle!

Oh boy, yeah. Motherfucker's acting voice sounds like goddamn Ash Ketchum. When he does the spoken word bit during the toast in the track Livin' It Up On Top in Hadestown the first time I heard all I could think was "who the fuck let Naruto play the role of Orpheus???"

 

I’ve been trying for an extremely long time to find a way to explain why I greatly dislike both of these bands, and this is exactly it

 

Also speaking to the whole “faking an accent” thing, it generally doesn’t bother me. But one time I saw Pinegrove (pre-sexual coercion) I was extremely turned off to find that he fakes the whole southern drawl thing

 

yeah people from NJ don’t sound like that lol. people from MS and TN don’t even really. it’s definitely a “have never heard a southern person speak” southern accent

 

Taylor Swift is still the weirdest fake accent because she just completely dropped the southern twang one day and just spoke with her regular Mid Atlantic accent

 

Some fake laughs in songs destroy my soul lol

 

With very few exceptions, there’s no coming back from whistling for me.

 

This song/album/band is perfect and that includes the build up to and the whistling around 1:20 in this.
