Had to google what Gasolina was, but I think I need to ask what the opposite of a co-sign is haha

Sometimes I think parallel universes must exist because I can’t imagine not having been confronted with Gasolina hundreds of times

The name Daddy Yankee rings a bell, but i've no idea why. Certainly not this song.

I've become an expert at avoiding music I don't really listen to. I was talking to someone last night about that Weeknd song that sounds like Take On Me. Apparently it got big because it was on tik tok or something? I had NO idea, i've only heard the song a handful of times, yet it's one of the biggest songs on the planet because some people liked to dance to it on video? I like The Weeknd, but I have a total lack of awareness of music outside what I listen to regularly haha

To be fair big hits usually were a lot less avoidable at the time of Gasolina than they are now. Now everything is way more fragmented.

Holy shit, just looked it up again, it's 10 years old??? No wonder I never heard it. That was probably when I was as far removed from popular music as i've ever been.

That and I can't stand reggaeton. Ghastly stuff.

I literally have never heard that song before and the last time I even heard his name was almost 12 years ago:

Daddy Yankee Defends His Decision To Back John McCain

I remember thinking it was a weird as hell endorsement and then promptly never thought about him ever again until now.

Trick Daddy also endorsed John McCain back then lol

Anyway Daddy Yankee was actually pretty damn successful in the last few years. Dura was huge for example.

I think I've heard "Gasolina" coming from car windows more than I've ever actively chose to play any one song myself.

Yeah, but that was more of an inescapable meme. I wouldn’t mind betting that a good 75% of people that know the song but don’t have a clue who did it. I didn’t until 30 seconds ago!

Daddy Yankee is huge in a lot of parts of the world and among many communities and has been for years. “Dura” was a huge international solo hit of his only two years ago. You not knowing him is definitely not because people in general don’t.

I'm not doubting he's huge. But the Despacito meme was everywhere. And if you were to ask a lot of casual music fans, especially over here, they'd probably say its a Beiber song! I know it wouldn't have made it anywhere near the charts in the UK if it wasn't for his remix or the memeification of it. The UK isn't known for multiculturalism in the pop charts haha (or anywhere else for that matter, thanks brexit).

Was just looking up some stats actually and in the past 15 years, he's only had two songs crack the top 40 and only spent about 40 weeks on the charts, 35 of which were for Despacito. And not one of his album has entered the album charts. He's definitely not that well known over here.

Yeah I would agree that he’s not the one that people think of when thinking Despacito. Though I do think he’s the highlight.

I associate despacito with Luis fonsi. I don't think the Bieber version came out until later and then I had to listen to his mangled Spanish on it
