  2. I love Van but Dylan and Joni beat him out for me and maybe also Neil Young and Crosby. If we add in longevity it becomes a different conversation I guess but I haven't heard most of the later stuff from these guys

Joni is the other main contender for me, she had a patchier 80s though so that pushes Van above for me. Incredible discography though; Hejira, Blue, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Cour & Spark are all basically untouchable for me.

Bob is of course one of the greats, but he has more patchy periods as well it's hard for me to put him above Van in terms of consistency. Plus, just a personal preference but I prefer Van's lyrical style as well as more expressive/jazz and soul influenced vocal delivery to Dylan's equally inimitable vocals.

Neil might have my favorite peaks (After the Gold Rush, On the Beach, Tonight's the Night), but he has so many skippable LPs it's hard to fully throw him in the conversation.

Crosby is great as well but has too small a solo discog for me to consider him a major contender.

TL;DR They're all greats and there's arguments to be made for each!

I think Neil Young is the best and one of the few who could be a great songwriter and guitar player

Maybe some of For All Of This and maybe a few trace elements scattered through The Room’s Too Cold, but after that not really at all.
