i don't think permission should have to be given

i think its detrimental to good art that someone could make the best beat of their life using a sample and never be able to use it because some asshole thinks their work is the end all be all of art and won't let someone else use it

Welp, I sure did strike a nerve in some folks haha

I didn't say anything about whites/blacks/class nor was I inferring any of that. There are plenty of articles, videos, etc of Zeppelin doing much more than using a riff five times removed from its roots as blues music.

I still listen, and I still enjoy it... and recognize how great it sounds. Doesn't mean they didn't straight up jack other artists melodies, lyrics, themes, riffs, etc...

I think, without permission, it's a slippery slope, but I get your point and don't even necessarily disagree. But you asked if I thought it was stealing, not what level I thought stealing was "ok" in the name of art.

I'm really not trying to play the semantics game and certainly not trying to tell people not to enjoy Zeppelin (or whomever). 'Twas just a jokey joke.

I never referenced "cultural appropriation" and personally think it's bullshit... now more than ever.

I know music is subjective but sometimes I'll hear someone's criticism of why they don't like an album or artist or something and it can be silly. If you don't like it you don't like it and that is fine, but I feel like some people have a checklist of things they expect all artists to hit or else they knock it, and I guess I find it close-minded. Like criticizing the lyrics when the album is telling the story thru instrumentation, or criticizing an album for not being cohesive when they were experimenting and dabbling in different stuff and I guess idk why that's a negative. It's like why criticize an artist for not doing something they didn't even set out to do in the first place? That isn't even what they were trying to accomplish. I guess u could argue that u didn't like what they were trying to accomplish, and even that I would be more on board with than "lyrics weren't deep enough it's trash" - like maybe the point of the song isn't to be deep but to be mindless fun and that's ok. Idk I wish some ppl were more flexible I guess.

I totally agree, that's why I usually just dislike something because it sucks.

it's even worse when people dismiss and sometimes disrespect entire genres because it lacks x, something their favorite genre "has plenty of". like wow this punk band could really use a guitar solo or two they're so simple (a real, documented criticism)

then again pretentiousness and ignorance are very useful natural filters

There's very little difference between Blink 182 and Lit. Some may say they're even the same band.
