its so funny you say this because, living in NC as I do, theres A LOT of Bluesgrass bands here and a very large Bluegrass scene and my goodness they can be very elitist about what constitutes "real" Bluegrass. I had a romantic partner and he played double bass in a bluegrass band, they also had a percussionist, and they would flat out be denied from playing certain venues here because they used percussion and had a woman as the singer.

 

The bluegrass and country purists are the worst. Genres evolve; get over it.

 

Nickel Creek and its offshoots is the only bluegrass I actively listen to, I know they're folk and Americana too, but I appreciate the technical skill in bluegrass

 

So you're saying I should listen to them, huh?

 

YES! I think youd like them. They have some more textured/slower songs and they even dabble in spoken word stuff as well as large conceptual albums but they have a lot of just tight country rock songs as well.

Not sure I've asked this but where in NC? I just moved up there. I came from Northern Florida. Huge local bluegrass scenes there. The percussion thing I fully get but I never encountered the female thing. I've played with almost entirely female vocalists in that scene. Guess that was just my local crew though.

I used to play in a bluegrass band that was made up of members of a punk-ish band I played in so I can relate haha. It's like, they're all so ridiculously talented and are generally good people but are soooooo closed minded and pretentious about music.

 

I consider The Milk Carton Kids bluegrass as well. Their flat-picking is out of this world.

 

Ocean Isle Beach, the lower end of NC basically. Close to the SC border

 

Crooked Still is also very good.

I remember having to leave a vocalist out of certain venues because he'd scream part of the third verse of Railroad Bill.

yep, quite a distance haha. Charlotte is great im hoping to move there once im financially more stable, its a very very nice city. Far nicer than Raleigh which is funny since Raleighs the capital lol. Lots of good places to eat in Charlotte!

 

Yeah I'm finally getting settled here and really liking it so far. Haven't been to Raleigh but I've been to Chapel Hill/Carrboro and that's really nice over there. Reminded me of the things I loved about my hometown (Tallahassee) but without any of the obvious problems.

 

Chapel Hill is real nice also. The parts of Florida id been to were really nice like Orlando but i never got to go out to Tallahasse or anywhere around threre. glad youre liking Charlotte though! when i move up there and if we're still in touch on here hit me up we can go grab drinks and complain about this thread haha

 

Tallahassee has cool places and people but the city itself has some catching up to do. It's unjustifiably large haha. The actual city itself is technically bigger than Orlando.
For sure! You should make it out here right as rent is headed back down. It's leveling off now cause they put up a ridiculous amount of apartments in a short amount of time.
