    what a waste of wood

I love "if I believe you" through "loving someone" and then the 2 closing tracks. The rest are okay, I certainly don't hate them. (Other than The Sound)

I feel like most of the dislike from the band comes from the over the top positive reaction to them haha. They're pretty good. That's all.

I don't think they're suited to pop music - particularly their latest record. I think the singles from that (Love Me, The Sound, Ugh, She's American) are really bad, awkward sounding songs. Whereas I think when they're a bit more experimental and playful - they write some wonderful tracks.

I think the dichotomy is more pronounced on their latest, but I feel the same about the debut too.

If all I knew about this band was what was played on the radio, I would never have had the inclination to listen to an album.

Ugh! and The Sound are two of the most perfect pop songs I've heard in years.

Yea Love Me, Ugh!, and the Sound are brilliant songs. Those are the reasons that I want to like them more. Maybe I just need to really sit down and focus on a full listen, since I'm usually listening to it at work or somewhere I'm distracted. I keep hoping someday it'll click for me, but it just hasn't yet. Lots of highlights, but as whole pieces of work, I end up bored while listening to their albums, it all muddles together and that reflected in the live show for me. Listening to Change of Heart now though, and that's another great one.

Actually I have a question for the bigger fans of the band: both times I've seen them have been outside in huge settings. Are they the type of band that's better in an enclosed space? Because I could kind of see that being the case.

ive seen them in two huge concert halls and once in a 1k venue. the concert hall shows were better

Only time I've ever outright thought your opinion was bad, my friend. Had to happen eventually.

I've seen them twice at the same 5k amphitheater and it was phenomenal both times

I can't imagine they'd be anything but spectacular live.

I don't mean to dismiss an entire genre right now but I've been on a car ride the past two hours where my friend has been playing a playlist of very similar lo-fi bands and I have to say a large percentage of this feels like it's about style and vibe rather than writing actual engaging songs

i've seen them six times from a 150 cap to an ampitheater and my favorite show of theirs was probably the 1200 cap, though only once on the new album and that was at the ampitheater for a festival

there's definitely good stuff within that style/scene but a lot of it is aesthetic nonsense

the best songwriters really stand out amongst the others at that level. look at alex g, elvis depressedly, etc. they were always damn good songwriters and it showed up and that's why they're doing great stuff now with bigger sounds

yeah and when they went away from their heavy use of lo-fi, their music didn't suffer at all. Also bands not really grouped into that DIY/lo-fi scene like Guided By Voices or The Thermals that have done a great job of transitioning out of what could be a "crutch" in lo-fi production

Did the outdoor setting affect your opinion at all? That's what I'm more curious about than the size of the crowd.

Outdoor is dope. And you're usually too fucked up to be aware that you're outside.

Seeing The 1975 at a 525-cap venue is going to be one of my bragging rights shows forever.

My bragging rights show is getting drunk and happening to sit down five feet from Kevin Devine with only like eight other people there.

Off topic but my biggest "brag" show was seeing Nightmare of You with like 15 other people. The headlining band was late so NoY ended up playing the entirety of S/T and a bunch of other tracks (S/T was the only thing out at the time). When the band was done they literally walked right off the stage over by us and then we went drinking at the bar with them for like two hours.
