    Unpopular opinion is that I don't get why people think a band is going to blow up from getting an opening slot on an arena tour. I've been to so many huge tours where nobody really cared about the opening band and they ended up staying at the same popularity

    There is a version of the term pop that Elliott Smith falls under. The Beatles are considered pop in a certain light and a ton of Figure 8 derives significant influence from them.

    Also I saw an interview where Elliott called his music closer to pop than folk (which is what most people called his music) so there's that.
