Sometimes I like listening to the radio when I drive cause I don't know what I want to listen to.

Thats fair, but it's also fair to try that and come back with the same opinion.

Growing up it was all pop music and classic rock. I actually took dance classes for 8 years cause I wanted to be the next JT haha. It's not from lack of exposure to pop music growing up that I don't listen to pop music. I also think it's totally fair to take the 10 most popular artists of a genre and form an opinion about the genre as a whole based on their music

I was watching the JT Netflix joint and omg... don't pay attention to him during the dance routines. Look at the back up dancers. They make him look like shit.

10 is a pretty small number in the grand scheme of things, plus the most popular may not be representative of the genre as a whole. I guess I'm just a big believer in exploring new things and I've never come across a genre I didn't like anything from at all. I can see why others may not be like that but I still push for it because I think it's valuable to explore new things

JT is one of those people I feel like we all pretend we enjoy his music, dancing, and acting, and tell him he's attractive, but secretly none of us believe it, we just feel embarrassed to say otherwise

I think he's attractive! His acting... well he's never done anything that made me cringe. I do really much enjoy his music and his dancing isn't bad. He definitely gets a white boy pass on the dancing.

I am really quick to defend pop music because I feel like liking pop music and pop culture are often associated with vapidity, something I've definitely internalized at times

I really enjoyed JT's first two solo albums at the time. My Love is still a jam. I also love the song Chandelier and find Sia's story inspiring. Probably because it runs in contrast to most other pop music successes. I'd take Chandelier playing 10 times in a row over anything i just saw on the billboard hot 100.

Don't even get me started on the 2nd most talented member of nsync. Shawn Mendes should've stayed on vine or whatever he came from. he's so basic. he's fine enough to be social media famous but I'm not sold on him being top 40 famous even tho he is I guess lol

ive certainly dabbled in different parts of rap, and there are some artists i could say i like. i'd agree with just about everything you said, but i think sometimes our predispositions can be simply too deep, or rather, deep enough that i dont find much incentive to dig that deep because theres 540 other genres i dont have to try as hard for.

Want to be very clear there is zero sarcasm whatsoever in this, because we all know the internet's lack of tone:

    How's the country exploration going?

you say this a lot haha. but to an extent i don't want almost everything in the mainstream to be covered with 'vapidity' either. and that's happened recently. i want messaging in music as well, and i feel like that's getting lost (again, in the mainstream) and with what's been going on in the world, especially the past two years. i feel like we need some more messaging in music. so-called 'vapidity' is OK, but to a point. i can't relate to sex and drugs and partying and having a lot of money. and the same lyrics just get re hashed over and over as well. "closer" "tonight" "the music" "DJ" "i miss you" it's like we need a list of pop "keywords" in lyrics or something at this point. and BTW if y'all don't know me by now, you know most of what i listen to is pop, a whole mix of it, so i'm the last person to brush it off. (FWIW y'all know I listen to Gaga, 1D, Selena, as well as stuff like Grimes, Marina, Foxes, LIGHTS, etc)

a lot of people would completely brush off pop music because they were genuine snobs, sure, but on the flip side i don't think immediately coming to its defense is always necessary either. sometimes people automatically assume what someone means when they mention certain artists, before even getting to explain themselves lol

Tbh I like a lot of the vapidness. it's a fun escape.

Yeah there's absolutely nothing wrong with music as a form of escapism

And I was not saying or denying either of those things. My point still stands though. I don't think the vast majority of the radio or mainstream should be engulfed with repetition and vapidity. Especially when there is so much pop out there that people aren't aware of.

There definitely is a lot of repetition in the pop on radio but it's kind of always been that way, thankfully radio isn't the only way or maybe even the biggest way (? Maybe it still is) to discover new music these days. For example songs that never hit radio regularly chart on the top 100

I know you love pop, I think generally it needs to be relatable regardless of exactly why
