    Well, 3/4 ain't bad

  2. I wanted to listen to it last night! I ended up getting lost in a Skype call for 7 hours and by the time I had a "chance" to listen, my EP masters were done and I needed to upload everything to Bandcamp, Noisetrade, etc. I'll report back after I finally reward myself!! Hahaha

7 hour Skype call? That sounds just one step below Chinese water torture on the pain scale.

Sepultura, Testament, Death Angel, Suicidal Tendencies, Death (DM but thrashy riffs abound), Exodus, Heathen, Overkill

Edit: I do need to find more modern thrash bands

    what a waste of wood

    Sepultura fucking rules.

  9. I'm not huge on Explosions In The Sky. Like I don't think they're bad or anything but I always get vibe they're held in way higher regard than other bands in the same same genre that I think are better.

Yeah they're very average for post rock

They're really good, but definitely pretty entry level

I mean, I think The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place is one of the top albums of the genre, but everything else ranges from ok to occasionally good.

They're a really good band. Being accessible even to people not indoctrinated in the genre is a point of strength, not weakness.

I would say I disagree, because I feel like their accessibility comes at the price of not taking as many risks as many of their peers

    This

Their music is so safe and slow moving that it often fails to reach a point of strong engagement with the listener

I don't think I'd go quite that far haha

Tbh I don't even think the point of post rock is to be accessible. It's meant for some measure of experimenting and pushing boundaries in terms of songwriting as it is essentially a form of modern/contemporary classical, and an intentional departure from traditional rock songwriting form.

Stop for a second and realize that you just narrowly defined the "point" of a genre. Come on, man. You're better than that. Haha

    The rivalry is back on

I've never understood accessibility as a negative term to describe music. Shouldn't the goal be to make music that people find easy to get into? Complexity and accessibility aren't mutually exclusive imo.

  21. I'd agree that it's not the point of the genre, but I'd say a good portion of the genre is fairly accessible. I just went on tour with a post-rock band and we had this huge discussion one night about what their demographic was. And I told them that, as far as I could tell, they didn't have one, which is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to marketing. But this actually wraps back around to Explosions in the Sky changing the landscape of who listens to post-rock when they scored Friday Night Lights. Since then, it's become more recognizable as one of the most versatile and influential genres outside of the mainstream. It can be heavy enough for the punk kids and quiet enough for the indie kids. You can take your SO or your parents to a post-rock show. It paints cinematic and nostalgic pictures that can often be appreciated by anybody, and therefore, it is for nobody in particular.

There is something immensely enjoyable about Dragonforce despite not being what I'd consider good music.

The moment I saw the zoom in picture-in-picture of the guitar solo in their video, I knew I couldn't listen to them or I might lose my eyesight from them being perpetually rolling.
