They announced an album a year or so ago that never saw the light of day. There was also meant to be an EP released last year but I was told in the Glassjaw thread that it was only released on a European streaming service or something? Idk. Like most of Daryl's projects, nothing substantial was released and then they disappeared off the face of the earth.

The first like three or four songs on Popaganda is a really good run, but the rest of the album........

    hmmm

I didn't claim to be neutral, I framed the debate neutrally. Different thing entirely.

I think there are plenty of fucking horrible lyrics on EYEWTKAS - awful, spiteful shit and stuff is morally reprehensible. And yes, I think there are misogynistic moments on the record, bits that make me squirm.

At the same time I understand someone who argues that misogyny is the wrong term to describe EYEWTKAS. People can very easily be morally opposed to some of the lyrics and still disagree on terminology. And again, a lot of that leads into the question of intent. I can listen to EYEWTKAS because a) I don't feel I have to agree with everything lyrically in order to enjoy it, and b) I know that that record comes from a heavy relationship breakup. I'm not arguing that makes it all fine because it obviously doesn't but I see a very clear difference between bands that write lyrics continually reducing women to mere sex objects and a vocalist who was cheated on when he was seriously ill and thought he might die and who reacted spitefully (and also has said he regrets some of the lyrics on that record).

It's a snapshot in time of someone's emotional state and that's what I appreciate the record to be.

Remember earlier last week when people were like "sexist stuff is pretty much only on Reddit and sites like that"? Lol

When you hit a mothafucka, you hit that mothafucka Prestigious

No one is really saying you can't enjoy the record's music. But quite plainly a lot of men who are unaware of their sexist perception of the relationship they were in, become misogynistic after a breakup. Thats just what that is called. That's not an excuse for it because it's a product of the power structure in place itself - men historically have been very possessive and treated themselves as entitled to women and to react abusively hen a woman exercises her free will. He clearly isn't playing the victim in the lyrics, his aim is disrespect her and other women in dehumanizing ways, and I'm glad he regrets it now... but that record is misogynistic and debating that just sounds like you're excusing a very regrettable part of an otherwise well orchestrated effort at music.

    hmmm

What the hell? At what point have I been sexist?

And I said there were misogynistic moments on the record and other lyrics I'm morally opposed to as well. How can you not have read that and, furthermore, decided that I was excusing it?

I made it very clear in my last response to Letterbomb and I'm not bothering with it further. Being called an idiot for not originally describing my specific position (which I didn't want to do because I'd already said I didn't want to have a discussion about the lyrics on that album) and then being accused (implicitly and then explicitly) of sexism has really pissed me off.

I mean, I'm not saying you yourself are sexist but defending an album that is CLEARLY super sexist is kind of a bad look.

The idiot comment was a bit too far imo

Your line of reasoning re: the album being about a bad breakup doesn't excuse the lyrics

No, you continuously follow it up with "but..."

  19. JM95

    hmmm

And you just stop reading there do you? Because I don't then suddenly excuse it.

You qualify it, you say how it's somehow different than misogyny and you talk about it being a bad breakup and the dude being sick. There's no need to do that unless you're defending the lyrics

  21. JM95

    hmmm

I never once said it's different to misogyny. I explicitly said there was misogyny.

It's ridiculous how poor at you are at reading.

B, don't make me break out my grammatical skills on your "different to" using ass.

Why draw a comparison between this album and hypothetical "bands that write lyrics continually reducing women to mere sex objects"? Why stress the fact that he was sick? Why explain to us that you understand people who don't think misogyny is the right word to use?
