Oh my gosh, that Transient Hymn post is painful.

"You're not logical. I have minority family members. You have to care about my feelings and opinions at all times."

Kinda makes me wish Jason could snap his fingers with his Banfinity Gauntlet.

Saw this Friday and finally caught up in the thread after reading all weekend!

No rankings from me because I love almost all the MCU movies, but will say I'll never understand the Ultron hate lol. It literally has too many of the best scenes in the MCU and had everything the Avengers had but better.

I didn't see it posted here, but how does everyone feel about two of the strongest Avengers getting their asses kicked and needing to be saved by Cap and two regular people without powers? Other than small things like that, movie was amazing and I can't wait to see it again.

You liked Ultron more than The Avengers?

Yep! Both are great movies, but Ultron had more character moments, more comedy, better action. I get the Thor side story stuff but those things aren't enough to bring down the movie like people love to do.

The whole intro attack on Hydra, the party scene, the shot of Tony/Vision/Thor blasting Ultron all at once, The Hulk vs Tony fight and the final conversation of Vision and Ultron are just a few amazing moments.

    Like I said, I don't get it.

Out of all the plot conveniences utilized to assemble this movie, the sneak attack on Wanda and Viz that incapacitated a powerhouse was a pretty easy one to accept for me. The element of surprise there, both in the Black Order's attack and in the turning of the tide, felt like a reasonable justification for how that went down.

Plus, the build-up to Cap's reveal and use of the Avengers theme in that sequence was a highlight of the film. Makes me wish Marvel used some of their musical cues better. Like, that moment and the Black Panther music when we first see Wakanda were the only good examples in a film that easily could've had more. I would've liked to hear the Guardians theme at some point, and also the title theme from Thor: Ragnarok. Both are superhero-y themes that would've had such a strong impact. The Ragnarok piece especially could've worked in the Stormbreaker-making sequence.

On that note, it wouldn't have fit anywhere here, but I'd love for them to find a place for a classic Cap theme in Avengers 4. Something like what they did in the Smithsonian in Winter Soldier.

Oh, and Age of Ultron is poorly constructed and bogged down by setup the same way the worst MCU film, Iron Man 2, is. And, again, Whedon's treatment of Natasha was awful. Thank goodness he didn't do these films.

Though, I still like the film more than a lot of people due to how much I like the moments that do work that are sprinkled throughout. Kinda like ASM2, but on a much smaller level. The party sequence (minus that one Stark joke) and the farm sequence are just delightful. I really liked everything with Wanda in that movie, especially the visuals of her powers at the beginning. Hawkeye was actually a highlight, which was a nice change of pace, lol. Loved every moment of Vision, especially his closing conversation with Ultron. And, the main thematic drive of the movie being the same exhaustion with the Marvel thing that Whedon was feeling is interesting and underappreciated (though appreciating anything based on Whedon's fingerprints has gotten harder in the past few years, lol).

If I recut the film how I wanted it to look, I'd like the result more than the first Avengers. It just has some major problems that aren't easily to ignore.

Don't mean this in a combative way but you're missing the scene where Thor shows up on the battlefield with the Avengers theme in the background. That was the best music cue in the entire movie.

That is true, Vision did spend the entire movie being stabbed, healing from wound, then stabbed again, repeat. I guess that was their way of not having him completely own everyone since he has been overpowered in the last two movies he was in. I assume Scarlet Witch was just distracted a ton.

It still seemed weird to me that Black Widow was able to do so much damage, but like I said, small issues.

When Thor, Rocket and Groot showed up in Wakanda, I so badly wanted Immigrant Song to kick in :-)

That's one of my favorite moments, so I'm surprised I forgot that, lol. I think I liked the use of the Avengers theme better in the Cap reveal, even though I overall liked the Thor arrival a bit more. The Avengers theme there was the best choice thematically, but the Ragnarok theme also would've been cool just as a character moment. Still, we already got a better version of that when the "Immigrant Song" was played in Ragnarok, so they made the right call there with the team music.

Ah haha, I like Iron Man 2 a lot too and think that movie gets way too much hate as well. It is a lot of fun!

I agree with all the things you love about Ultron.

Thor going after a new weapon, Vision getting stabbed, and Hulk being scared were all super convenient sidelining choices, lol.

I love the Thor choice because, other than the replacement eye, I found his thread in this film awesome and the best he's ever been utilized outside of Ragnarok. It was a cool mythic, Herculean trial for him to go on. Unlike the Age of Ultron subplot, I think this was the best way he could've been used by far.

The Vision choice I put under the "ok" category. It makes enough sense to work for me but is still a bit convenient in a film that also sidelined Thor. The Hulk thing I'd say was definitely the wrong choice, though. The angle of Banner wanting Hulk to come out and Hulk refusing is a fun reversal of the norm as a premise, but I don't think it played well here. Maybe just have him scared in the opening New York sequence, but the subversion of expectations at the end by never revealing him? Not a fan. I think that's one of the places where the half-a-movie approach breaks down narratively.

    Hahaha correct.

I actually love the idea of it, but didn't think it played as well as it should. In Ragnarok it shows that the Hulk has been out for 2 years and acts like a child, so I think they set it up pretty well that after that insane beating, his "NO! I'm not coming out" is something a child would do. I do agree the New York sequence could have been the only scene with that and it would have been fine.

I was expecting them to play more on him and Black Widow's relationship, like maybe she is in danger and about to be killed and that causes Hulk to finally come out. But instead they just played into more of the issue of her being able to just be a human and stand her ground as well as Cap and Black Panther haha. (even though the 2 on 1 with her and Okoye was super badass so I forgive it)

If they make a compelling subplot in Avengers 4 where Banner and Hulk are sorting out their relationship, then I'll be glad he didn't Hulk out here. But, if it's kinda just an "I'm always angry" type reveal, then it's kind of a waste.

But, even then, what they did here doesn't work. Movies, even "part 1 of 2" movies, have to work on their own in fulfilling ways, even if the ending has an appropriate unresolved, defeated feeling. You can't keep going back to the well of "oh no I can't bring the Hulk out" in this film if that doesn't go anywhere in this film.

I forget who said it, but one of the writers or directors said they intentionally wanted to give Banner a chance to shine here without Hulk, but I don't think that's actually what happened. If that's their goal, we should've gotten one sequence (again, the New York one) where he tries to transform, maybe one more throwaway reference to that, and otherwise given Banner things to do that make sense for a Hulk-less Banner to do. Maybe have him working with Shuri or something. Made it about Banner finding his usefulness without his other side, instead of him trying to recapture his other side.

Anything more with Banner and Nat would've sucked, tbh...lol. Screw that Whedon choice. Taika addressed that thread surprisingly well in Ragnarok, and their first interaction had an appropriate level of awkward, but just move on after that. It was a bad narrative choice, and with the way relationships work in real life, it's believable that they'd be able to move on from that failed attempt by now.

Oh, and Nat is completely at the same level as Steve and just below T'Challa. I don't get why people don't get that.

You sold me actually, that may be enough even though I didn't mind their relationship in Ultron.

I guess I missed something, but Steve and T'Challa are super enhanced humans and she has no powers and she's just skilled right? I don't get how she is able to be on their level at all.

    Yeah I loved this.

I also loved Okoye’s line after the Witch did her thing. Can’t rememebr the exact words but it was like “Why wasn’t she down here from the beginning?!”
