Someone should start a new Twitter discourse that expecting people to remember characters’ names is ableist.

I’m out here referring to characters as the actors’ most famous roles.

It is definitely something that is more unique to Avatar than it is to most other blockbusters, but the focus was never really on the characters. They are almost intentionally stripped of flavor to keep the focus on the world building.

No one could remember Jake Sully’s name so they named a kid Spider.

The message of Avatar is that our society is trash, and so the message of our society is that you don't remember Avatar

Unfortunately Jim Cameron put a whale doing a backflip and tearing a guy's arm off with a harpoon line in this one, so good luck society

Got the 4K. I've been waiting so long for these 3 hours of bonus features. Proper home video release innit

  8. I gotta make it to Walmart this week so I can cop this and Skinamarink for the weirdest double-feature of all-time

This was a really good movie, although I do think it - and specifically the final action set piece - dragged on a little bit too long and could've and should've been trimmed just a bit. I know the first one was long, but it had *a lot* of story to set up. This one didn't need to do nearly as much heavy lifting plot wise. Minor gripe though. Surprisingly emotionally affecting too considering I really had not thought about the first one much at all in the intervening years.

  10. It should have been longer

That's how I feel about the first one, so I get it. I love those early opening scenes on earth from the extended cut. I will say that my favorite scenes from this one were the ones that I could see someone calling 'slow', where it almost felt like a nature documentary on an alien planet. Absolutely fascinating stuff.

I should also point out that this may be the first time that I've crossed the threshold where I forgot that I am watching special effects and really just felt like I was watching real things, particularly with the underwater creatures.

I agree the final set piece could have been shorter but I’d have loved that time just moved to the middle and them just exploring the water

The middle section of the movie is (I guess literally?) an other-worldly experience and by far my favorite part. I would have watched them swim around for hours with no plot. If the next one is just three hours of that with David Attenborough narrating, I'll go every day it's in theaters.

  14. Yeah I'm mostly joshing but that maddle section is incredible

Imagine reading this in 1999 and being told that not only would it come out but it would make more money than any other movie

    What is James Cameron

I wonder why he went with Jake during Josh

Maybe "Josh" just didn't work in Na'avi or something

It would have bombed if it was Josh Sully.

Watching this again right now with my son. The middle section with all of the water stuff is absolutely the best part of this movie. Also, these are hands down the best special effects that I have ever seen. As fantastic as much of this stuff is, it genuinely looks real.

yeah this is one of the only movies I've watched where I get to the boat stuff and I'm like oh yeah NONE of this is real

they're not really filming whaling boats in the ocean on another planet somewhere

I think it's because the lighting for the live action stuff is flawless. it doesn't feel flat or color graded and blended to make it match after the fact. definitely a new standard for immersive cgi

Will it come out six years later for true realism?
